Grace Chisholm Young
March 15, 1868 - March 29, 1944 Grace Chisholm Young was born on March 15, 1868, near London, England. She was the youngest of three surviving children. Her father was Warden of the Standards in the British government, in charge of the department of weights and measures. Her brother was sent to grammar school, a prestigious boarding school, and then earned a top scholarship to Oxford, but in the custom of the times in England, Grace and her sister were taught at home by their mother and a governess. Her family encouraged her to become involved in social work among the London poor but Chisholm wanted to continue her studies. Her mother would not allow her to study medicine so she decided to study mathematics at Girton College, part of Cambridge University. Girton, opened in 1869, was the first school in England dedicated to educating women at the university level. Chisholm entered Girton in 1889 at the age of 21. Women could not earn formal degrees at Cambridge at that time, but in 1893 she passed her final examinations (Mathematics Tripos) and scored the equivalent of a first-class degree. Chisholm wanted to continue in mathematics but women were not yet admitted to graduate schools in England so she went to Gottingen in Germany to study with Felix Klein. This was one of the major mathematical centers in the world. The decision to admit her had to be approved by the Berlin Ministry of Culture. She earned the Ph.D. magna cum laude at the age of 27. Again government approval had to be obtained to allow her to take the examination. She thus became the first woman to officially receive a doctorate in any field in Germany. As Sylvia Wiegand writes in [5]

Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you very much.
Mr. President, thank you for that wonderful introduction. And thank you for coming out in such large numbers today at such an important time for Yale and the United States. I would like to thank the mayor of New Haven , John DeStefano, for being here, and my great friend and former colleague, your Member of Congress, Rosa DeLauro. Thank you, Rosa, for being here. I have two other friends, who like me are no longer in public office, but each in their own way, they made a great difference to what we were able to do. Kurt Schmoke, the former mayor of Baltimore. My great partner, Ernesto Zedillo, the former president of Mexico. And thank you for being here.
I also have seen already today a lot of people who are members of our administration. There are five or six of them out there, and so I appreciate Yale giving us a pretext for holding a Clinton alumni meeting here today.
I was privileged to study here for exactly one percent of Yale's three hundred years. I love the law school. I love my professors, and have stayed in touch with many of them over all of these long years. One of them I was able to put on the Court of Appeals. One of them I tried to torment in class with disagreements and he lived to torment me my constitutional law professor, Robert Bork. And we had a great set of debates 30 years ago. Now that I replay them in my mind, they seem fresh today.

Family and Early Childhood
On October 28, 1955, shortly after 9:00 p.m., William Henry Gates III was born. He was born into a family with a rich history in business, politics, and community service. His great-grandfather had been a state legislator and mayor, his grandfather was the vice president of a national bank, and his father was a prominent lawyer. [Wallace, 1992, p. 8-9] Early on in life, it was apparent that Bill Gates inherited the ambition, intelligence, and competitive spirit that had helped his progenitors rise to the top in their chosen professions. In elementary school he quickly surpassed all of his peer's abilities in nearly all subjects, especially math and science. His parents recognized his intelligence and decided to enroll him in Lakeside, a private school known for its intense academic environment. This decision had far reaching effects on Bill Gates's life. For at Lakeside, Bill Gates was first introduced to computers.
First computing Experience
In the Spring of 1968, the Lakeside prep school decided that it should acquaint the student body with the world of computers [Teamgates.com, 9/29/96]. Computers were still too large and costly for the school to purchase its own. Instead, the school had a fund raiser and bought computer time on a

Grants Designed to Broaden Young People's Visions of Life's Potential NEW ORLEANS, July 19, 2002 As a child in St. Louis, Tammara Combs Turner was always a good student, especially in math and science. But growing up in an inner-city neighborhood, she didn't think much about going to college. "I always thought college was a good thing, but I didn't think I could go," Turner recalls. "No one in my family had gone to college, and no one really said 'You should go to college'." Her perspective changed, however, after enrolling in TRIO, a series of programs designed to help underprivileged students get into and thrive in college.

"The future of any society depends upon the character and competence of its young. In order to develop their competence, young people need guidance to provide them with direction and a sense of purpose. They need relationships that embody and communicate high standards. They need to experience activities that are challenging, inspiring, and educative. Many of the conditions for the development of character and competence in the young have deteriorated in recent years. Instead of finding guidance and clear standards, young people often encounter inattention, low expectations, cynicism, or community conflict. In many places, families, schools, religious institutions, and neighborhoods have weakened. Mass media transmit messages that are confusing at best and corrupting at worst. All of these conditions must be changed if we are to create a society where youngsters can attain their full potential. The future of our society depends upon it."

http://pupgg.princeton.edu/www/jh/research/Happer_William.htmlx
I am interested in the physics of spin-polarized atoms and nuclei, and in the application of these spin-polarized systems in other areas. Together with Professor Cates, research associates and graduate students at Princeton and collaborators from various medical schools, I have been working on ways to use polarized He and Xe for magnetic resonance imaging of lungs and perhaps other organs. In most of our work we use circularly polarized laser photons to pump angular momentum into electron spins, and we use hyperfine interactions to transfer angular momentum from the polarized electrons to the nuclei. In appropriate containers, the polarized nuclei can be stored for hours or even days with little loss of spin. Much of our present work is aimed at understanding the slow loss of spin which occurs in these containers. The physics of this process is not well understood, especially in the case of surface interactions.

http://www.Volleyball.ORG/ William G. Morgan (1870-1942), who was born in the State of New York, has gone down in history as the inventor of the game of volleyball, to which he originally gave the name "Mintonette". The young Morgan carried out his undergraduate studies at the Springfield College of the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) where he met James Naismith who, in 1891, had invented basketball. After graduating, Morgan spent his first year at the Auburn (Maine) YMCA after which, during the summer of 1896, he moved to the YMCA at Holyoke (Massachusetts) where he became Director of Physical Education. In this role he had the opportunity to establish, develop, and direct a vast programme of exercises and sports classes for male adults. His leadership was enthusiastically accepted, and his classes grew in numbers. He came to realise that he needed a certain type of competitive recreational game in order to vary his programme. Basketball, which sport was beginning to develop, seemed to suit young people, but it was necessary to find a less violent and less intense alternative for the older members.
