He further emphasized the importance of the applied side in mathematics and illustrated the intimate connections with physics, engineering and technology. Cultivating scientific relations he decisively enlivened the scientific community. His idea of marriage of mathematics and applied sciences brought about not only an `Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics' - thereby establishing Applied Mathematics as a field of its own right in research and teaching - as well as the founding of the `Institute of Theoretical Physics', the `Institute of Geophysics', the `Institute of Applied Electricity', the `Research Institute for Aerodynamics and Hydrodynamics' and the `Seminar for Acturial Mathematics'.
