B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Sir Angus Frank Johnstone Wilson (1913-1991) British writer who portrayed middle-class English life, its manners and characters from snobs and aristocrats to bums. Wilson was one of England's first openly gay writers. Wilson published his first book at the age of 36. "He's so good-looking," Clarissa said, "and a charmer. He hasn't done much, has he? It's awfully dangerous really for people with brains to have money and good looks. They´re practically born to waste their talents." (from Anglo-Saxon Attitudes Angus Wilson was born in Bexhill, East Sussex, into an elderly, upper-middle-class family. His father, an inveterate gambler, was Scot and mother came from South Africa. The family lived in hotels and boardinghouses and moved from place to place depending upon the father's gambling luck. Wilson's siblings played transvestite games, in which he also participated. Later Wilson depicted his rootless hotel life in the autobiographical work WILD GARDEN (1963). After graduating from Merton College, Oxford, where he studied mediaval history and developed his acting talents, Wilson pursued a number of jobs. He joined the British Library and worked there as a book cataloger, and eventually became deputy to the superintendent of the Reading Room. Wilson worked at the library until 1955. "The one thing that matters, Gerald, with the children," said Inge, "is to be consistent. We want their little bodies to grow straight and fine like the birch trees on the mountains. But that is not so difficult. They are good strong little animals without blemishes."

Edwin Hubble was born in Marshfield, Missouri, on November 20, 1998. During his lifetime, he made some of the most important discoveries in modern astronomy. He became the outstanding leader in the observational approach to cosmology, as contrasted with previous work that involved much philosophical speculation. Although he wasn't an outstanding high school student, when he graduated he received a half scholarship to the University of Chicago, where he received his B.S. degree in 1910. In the same year. he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, under which he read Roman and English Law at Queens College, Oxford. He returned to the United States in l913, passed the bar examination. After a year of practicing law in Louisville, Kentucky, he “chucked” the law and returned to the University of Chicago for postgraduate work leading to his doctoral degree in astronomy. While finishing work for his doctorate early in l9l7, Hubble was invited to join the staff of the Mount Wilson Observatory in Pasadena, California, but turned it down to enlist in the infantry. After serving in France, and the end of the war, Hubble went immediately to Pasadena, California, and the Observatory. In the 1920s, while working with the most advanced technology of the time, Hubble showed that some of the numerous distant, faint clouds of light in the universe were actually entire galaxies—much like our own Milky Way. The realization that the Milky Way is only one of many galaxies forever changed the way astronomers viewed our place in the universe.

Edwin Powell Hubble "I knew that even if I were second or third rate, it was astronomy that mattered." This sentence, written by Edwin Hubble recalling his youth, tells us a lot about this stubborn, ambitious, sometimes even snobbish and arrogant young man. A man who eventually broke the promise made to his father and followed the path dictated by his passion. As a result of Hubble's work, our perception of mankind's place in the Universe has changed forever: humans have once again been set aside from the centre of the Universe. When scientists decided to name the Space Telescope after the founder of modern cosmology the choice could not have been more appropriate. A promising student Edwin Hubble was born in Missouri in 1889, the son of an insurance executive, and moved to Chicago nine years later. At his high school graduation in 1906, the principal said:

Consortium for Undergraduate Research and Education in Astronomy
The CUREA program at Mt. Wilson Observatory is a two-week intensive course in observational astronomy designed for physics and astronomy undergraduates as well as amateur astronomers. The course consists of lectures by professional astronomers and educators, special lab exercises, and a mini-project designed and executed by each student during the second week of the program. CUREA students stay on the mountain and have unlimited access to a solar telescope and spectrometer during the day and a 16-inch telescope with a CCD imager and a stellar spectrograph during the evening. During the course we also reserve some time on the 60" telescope and the 24" TIE telescope. Mt. Wilson Observatory is a major facility for observational astronomy located just north of Pasadena, CA, in the San Gabriel Mountains. Mt. Wilson has a rich history of discovery in solar and stellar astrophysics as well as in cosmology. George Ellery Hale made major discoveries concerning the nature of sunspots using the solar telescopes at Mt. Wilson. Harlow Shapley convincingly showed that the sun is not the center of the Galaxy using the 60" telescope at Mt. Wilson. Edwin Hubble discovered the expansion of the Universe using the 100" telescope. In the 1930's Albert Michelson measured the diameter of the star Betelgeuse using an interferometer with the 100" telescope. Topics in observational astronomy covered during the course include:

Wilson Caldwell, born a slave, was the first black man to be elected to public office in Chapel Hill. Wilson Caldwell was a gardener, a janitor and a waiter at UNC. He was elected to a seat on the Chapel Hill Town Board in 1886.

By DAVE HART, STAFF WRITER CHAPEL HILL In the local election on May 5, 1953, Hubert Robinson won a seat on what was then called the Chapel Hill Board of Aldermen. In their election reports the next day, the daily newspapers noted the historic significance of the vote. Robinson, they said, was the first black person ever elected to office in Chapel Hill. Well, nobody gets it right all the time. Almost 70 years before the 1953 election, that particular color barrier was broken by a former slave named Wilson Caldwell. Caldwell, who served for decades as the university's janitor, ran as a Republican on the 1886 ballot and outpolled UNC professor Ralph Graves to earn a seat on the Chapel Hill town board. "Wilson was born a slave, but he achieved a lot of respect," said Edwin Caldwell Jr., Wilson Caldwell's great-grandson. "Coming through at that time, to be elected to the town board, that said a lot about how highly he was regarded within the community."
