WILLIAM WHISTON 1667 - 1752
William Whiston was born at Norton.-juxta-Twycross, Leicestershire in 1667. He studied first at home and later at Tamworth Grammar School and in 1686 was admitted to Clare Hall, Cambridge where he qualified as B.A. (1690), and MA. (1695), and was elected Fellow in 1691. William Lloyd ordained Whiston at Lichfield in 1695 and he married Ruth Antrobus in 1699. Whiston's ~ Earth (1696) attracted considerable attention, where he postulated the origin of the earth from the atmosphere of a comet and all major changes in the earth's history were attributed to the action of comets. Successively chaplain to Bishop John Moore at Norwich and rector of Lowestoft, Whiston succeeded Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics 1702-1710.

WHISTON, WILLIAM
Whiston is a striking example of the association of an entirely paradoxical bent of mind with proficiency in the exact sciences. He also illustrates the possibility of arriving at rationalistic conclusions in theology without the slightest tincture of the rationalistic temper. He was not only paradoxical to the verge of craziness, but intolerant to the verge of bigotry. " I had a mind," he says, " to hear Dr (John) Gill preach. But, being informed that he had written a folio book on the Canticles, I declined to go to hear him." When not engaged in controversy he was not devoid of good sense. He often saw men and things very clearly, and some of his ban mots are admirable.

William Whiston and the Deluge
The years 1680 and 1682 were years of unusually bright comets. Many pamphlets were printed, especially in Germany, on the imminent end of the world; at the very least, great catastrophes were expected. There was nothing new in such prognostications. In earlier centuries and also earlier in the seventeenth century, comets were regarded with awe and every possible evil effect was ascribed to them. Thus a scholarly author, David Herlicius, published in 1619 a discourse on a comet that had appeared shortly before, in 1618, and enumerated the calamities that this comet, and comets in general, bring with them or presage: The fear and even horror caused by the comet of 1680 was just beginning to calm down when in 1682 another great comet appeared. Edmund Halley was twenty-six years old when this comet of 1682 appeared. He had experience in astronomical observations and calculations, having spent time on the island of St. Helena, cataloguing there 341 southern stars; he had observed the transit of Mercury, and made pendulum observations. Now he calculated the orbit of the comet of 1682, and predicted its return in 1759. Actually, the periodicity of comets was not first discovered by Halley. The ancient authors knew that comets have their time of revolution. Seneca wrote in his treatise A comet with a periodicity of about 70 years was known to the rabbis.
