Legends and stories about William Wallace in Lanark
William Wallace has inspired writers throughout the ages to describe his daring deeds. Unfortunately there is little information that has come down to us from the period when he was alive. There is no doubt that he struck fear into the hearts of the English. A contemporary chronicler writing in the monastery of Lanercost in Cumberland, has this to say:
"Robert Wishart, bishop of Glasgow, ever foremost in treason conspired with the Steward of the Kingdom, named James, for a new piece of insolence, yea, for a new chapter of ruin. Not daring openly to break their pledge to the king, they caused a certain bloody man, William Wallace, who had formerly been a chief of brigands in Scotland, to revolt against the king and assemble the people in his support." Another monastic chronicler from England, Walter of Hemingborough in Yorkshire, informs us that:

ALBA - The Sword of Sir William Wallace
Little is known about the origins of Sir Williams sword for it carries no makers mark and is therefore difficult to date. We do know, however, that King James IV ordered the sword to be rehilted in 1505, so that it would be more fitting to Scotlands National Hero. The sword, which is a traditional two handed broad sword, is approximately 66 inches in length with the blade itself being around 52 inches long. The quality of the metal used for the blade suggests that it may have been forged in Scotland, unlike other swords of the period which were often Flemish or German in origin. It is reasonable to assume that in order to carry, let alone weild, the sword Sir William Wallace must have been a man of considerable physical, as well as virtuous, stature. In fact it is estimated that to be able to weild the sword Sir William must have been more than six feet six inches tall. The sword was traditionally kept in Dunbarton castle until 1869 when, of course, it was more fittingly placed in the New National Wallace Monument. THE TRUTH BOOKS ALBA

Sir William Wallace (1270-1305)
William Wallace, born near Pasiley, Renfrewshire, was hanged, disemboweled, beheaded and quartered in 1305. He thus suffered the same fate as Welsh leader Dafydd ap Gruffudd some 22 years before and for the same reasons: both had dared the might of the English crown; both had dared to raise armies against Edward I and both had fought for the independence of their nations. In order to understand Wallace's significance in his country's history, we have to look at the situation in Scotland that led to his arrival as leader of his people in the vacuum that Robert the Bruce was not ready to fill until he was perfectly sure of success.
A new struggle for control of Scotland had begun at the death of Alexander III in 1286, leaving as heir his grandchild Margaret, the infant daughter of the King of Norway. English King Edward, with his eye on the complete subjugation of Scotland suggested that Margaret should marry his son, a desire consummated at a treaty signed and sealed at Birgham. Under the terms, Scotland was to remain a separate and independent kingdom, though Edward was to keep English garrisons in a number of Scottish castles. When the young princess died, all plans changed: the succession was now open to many claimants, the strongest of whom were John Balliol and Robert Bruce.
After the decision had gone in favor of Balliol, he declared himself King of Scotland and declared that he would answer only to his own people; refusing to supply military service to Edward, who had supported his election. Overestimating his strength, he then concluded a treaty with France prior to planning an invasion of England.

WILLIAM WALLACE, was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A. in 1933 and educated at the University of Utah (Ph.D., 1962) and the University of Oxford, with composition studies under Leroy Robertson (Utah), Egon Wellesz, and Edmon Rubbra (Oxford). He was on the music faculty of Rutgers University prior to moving to Canada in 1967, when he took up a position at McMaster University to teach music theory and composition, and eventually, music criticism in a M.A. program he helped found. In 1989, he retired from full-time teaching to devote major time to composition. He holds Canadian citizenship.
Wallace's works, particularly orchestral works, have been extensively performed in Canada, the United States, and to an increasing extent, Europe. His compositional style may be described as consonant and tonal, which features are colored, however, through a predilection for a high level of rhythmic interest accompanied by a frequent use of octatonic scales. A highly personal and recognizable style results, often well-liked by audiences.
