William Wallace was self-taught in mathematics earning his living working for a bookbinder and tutoring mathematics. He became a mathematics teacher at Perth Academy in 1794. Playfair advised him to apply for the post of professor at the Royal Military College at Great Marlow where he was a colleague of Ivory . Then, in 1819, he was appointed professor of mathematics at Edinburgh University. Wallace's work was on geometry and Simson 's line (which is definitely not due to Simson !) appears first in a paper of Wallace in 1799. One of Wallace's theorems, if lines intersect each other to form triangles omit one line in turn then the circumcircles of the triangles have a point in common was generalised to 2n lines by Clifford He published two books, A New Book of Interest containing Aliquot Tables (aliquot = fractional) and Geometrical Theorems and Analytical Formulae.

William Wallace
In his short 35 year life, Wallace made a major contribution to Scotland's freedom and independence from England.
Wallace is believed to have been born around 1270, either at Elderslie, Renfrewshire, or at Ellerslie, near Kilmarnock. He is thought to have been the son of Sir Malcolm Wallace, a knight and small landowner.
As a boy, Wallace was sent to live with his uncle in Stirlingshire, who instilled him with stories about Scottish freedom. Relations between England and Scotland had been amicable until Edward I took the English throne in 1272 and inaugurated 250 years of bitter hatred and warfare. In 1286, Alexander III of Scotland died. There were many claimants to the throne, and the Scottish nobles foolishly requested Edward's arbitration. He cleverly compelled them all to recognise his overlordship of Scotland before pronouncing John Balliol king in 1292. But Edward's insistence on having the final say in Scottish cases eventually provoked the Scottish nobles to force Balliol to ally with France.
Edward conquered Scotland in 1296, taking the Stone of Destiny on which Scottish kings were crowned to Westminster. Balliol abdicated, and Edward decided to rule the Scots himself.

http://cpa.feynsinn.de/eng/wallace/wallace.html
...a famous name, but here we don't deal with the scottish hero who lived between 1272 and 1305. The William Wallace I'd like to introduce to you lived about 600 years later: from 1860 to 1940. Although the two men share the same name they are not related to each other. This is pretty sure, because the medieval Wallace had no son.
William Wallace - from now on we're just talking about the composer - wasn't a freedom fighter, but he's nevertheless a very interesting person. He was a poet, a painter, an author, a soldier, a physician and of course a composer. How could a man with all these skills be forgotten - and why is his music so rarely played? Well, I don't really have an answer to these questions, but I'd like to do my share to correct this situation. An important step to achive this goal has already been done by Hyperion Records. As far as I know they released the only two Wallace CDs (in 1995 and 1997) ever. They contain some of Wallace's finest orchestral music. So, there's not much of Wallace's music available on CD, but these two disks offer really a very good introduction to his music.
Well, maybe you like to know more about William Wallace by now. If this is the case, why not have a look at his biography or look for the CDs?

by Roy Campbell
William Wallace (c1270 - 1305) William Wallace is one of Scotland's greatest national heroes, undisputed leader of the Scottish resistance forces during the first years of the long and ultimately successful struggle to free Scotland from English rule at the end of the 13 th Century. Records of Wallace's life are patchy and often inaccurate. This is partly because early accounts of his heroic deeds are speculative, and partly because he inspired such fear in the minds of English writers at the time, that they demonised him, his achievements, and his motives. Many of the stories surrounding Wallace have been traced to a late-15 th Century romance "The Wallace", ascribed to Henry the minstrel, or "Blind Harry". This epic is vehemently anti-English in language and tone. The most popular tales about Wallace are not supported by documentary evidence, but they show his firm hold on the imagination of his people. He represented the spirit of the common man striving for freedom against oppression, and exposed the Scottish nobility of the time as a group of unprincipled opportunists. Wallace's place as a hero in Scottish history is assured. There can be little doubt that he has always been revered as a self-effacing and passionate patriot by later generations of Scots. Unlike the conniving Scottish nobles who had collaborated with the English in return for financial benefits, Wallace had never sought personal fame nor benefited from it. He had accrued neither wealth nor land.
