Philip II of Spain, a champion of the Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation, supported the Holy League by sending money and troops to France. After the murder of Henry III, Philip claimed the throne of France for his daughter, Isabella Clara Eugenia. A letter to Philip dated 28 October 1589 written in code fell into the hands of Henry of Navarre who was to become the next king, Henry IV. ... when Philip, assuming that the cipher could not be broken, discovered that the French were aware of his military plans, he complained to the Pope that black magic was being employed against his country. circle could be squared , an angle trisected , and the cube doubled using only ruler and compass . He showed in these lectures that the "proofs" which had been published earlier in the year were fallacious. Roomen had proposed a problem which involved solving an equation of degree 45. The ambassador from the Netherlands made comments to Henry IV on the poor quality of French mathematicians saying that no Frenchman could solve Roomen Roomen Roomen (the Apollonian Problem) and Roomen solved it using hyperbolas Roomen 's problem in 1595, stating in the introduction [1]:-

VIERGE—V1ETA In addition to this the discussions announced in the opening speech, regarding measures for the reformation of the Church and the protection of her liberties, took place; and a part of the Constitutions found in the Clementinum, published in 1317 by John XXII., were probably enacted by the council. Still it is impossible to say with certainty what decrees were actually passed at Vienne. Additional decisions were necessitated by the violent disputes which raged within the Franciscan order as to the observance of the rules of St Francis of Assisi, and by the multitude of subordinate questions arising from this. Resolutions were also adopted on the Beguines and their mode of life (see BEGUINES), the control of the hospitals, the institution of instructors in Hebrew, Arabic and Chaldaic at the universities, and on numerous details of ecclesiastical discipline and law. Viète's father, Etienne Viète, was an attorney in Fontenay and a notary in Le Busseau. He was also a procureur du roi in Fontenay. Viète's grandfather was a merchant in the village of Foussay in Lower Poitou. Viète's mother was the first cousin to Barnabé Brisson, President of the Parlement de Paris under the League.
All the evidence places the Viète family among the most distinguished in Fontenary. At least by the age of twenty, Viète was Sieur de la Bigotière. His two brothers both had distinguished positions. I do not see how to avoid the conclusion that the family was wealthy.

p and More
Viete is not regarded as having a direct role in fluid mechanics but is included because he is my son's favorite mathematician. Viete was the first to represent mathematical quantities by letters and introduced the plus (+) and minus (-) symbols. He derived a formula for p in the form of an infinite product. His substitution method for the solution of polynomials still goes by his name. Finally, he was the first to describe the law of cosines and developed multiple angle formulas. The latter were used in his famous product for 2/ p To learn more about Viete click on his picture at the above right or return to the History Link page.

(master of requests) and royal privy councillor. He was a Catholic at his death. His kindly treatment of Adrianus Romanus, a rival scholar, indicates a generous nature. To Vieta as a mathematician Huygens, Halley, Chasles, and Fourier have given high rank. He made the use of letters as symbols of quantity a general custom. He was highly skilful in the treatment of equations, knew the relations between the positive roots and the coefficients, and devised solutions for the equations of the second, third, and fourth degrees by methods different from the existing ones. He enumerated the principle of homogeneity. He extended the tables of Rheticus, gave formulae for the sine and cosine of a multiple angle, and attempted to find the value of pi by means of infinite series. To a considerable extent he applied algebra to geometry and trigonometry and geometry and trigonometry to algebra. His collected works were published by Van Schooten, "Opera Mathematica", Leyden, 1646. Viète, François (15401603) Viète was a native of the city of Fontenay, France. He studied law at the University at Poitiers. He spent much of his time studying mathematics and cryptography, while he maintained a successful law practice. Later he applied basic trigonometry to astronomy and wrote Harmonicum coeleste and in 1579 published Canon mathematicus seu ad triangula Later, he concentrated his efforts on algebra and geometry. He published In artem analytic e m isagoge in 1591 and Supplementum geometriae in 1593. These works first introduced symbolic algebraic notation and techniques to trisect angles. He simplified the notation of algebra and was among the first to use letters to represent numbers. After Viète's death, his work De aquation u m recognitione et eme n datione was published. It contained a theory of equations, including solution methods for second, third, and fourth degree polynomials and the introduction of the terms negative and coefficient Major theorem: Law of cosines Major publications: Harmonicum coeleste;
