Mathematician, born in Hull, Humberside. A fellow of Caius College, Cambridge (1857), he developed George Boole 's symbolic logic, and in his Logic of Chance (1866) worked on the frequency theory of probability. He is best known for Venn diagrams , pictorially representing the relationships between sets, though similar diagrams had been used by Gottfried Leibniz and Leonhard Euler Page with an excellent explanation of Venn diagrams.

    Who was John Venn?
Venn diagrams were introduced in 1880 by John Venn, "M.A. Fellow and Lecturer in Moral Science, Caius College, Cambridge University", in a paper entitled On the Diagrammatic and Mechanical Representation of Propositions and Reasonings which appeared in the Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science S. 5. Vol. 9. No. 59. July 1880, [ John Venn was born August 4, 1834 in Hull, Yorkshire, England and died April 4, 1923 in Cambridge, England. He came from a Low Church Evangelical background and in 1853 entered Gonville and Caius College of Cambridge University in 1853. In 1857 he was named a Fellow of the college. He was ordained a priest 1859 and for a year was curate at Mortlake. He published his first book Symbolic Logic in 1881 and The Principles of Empirical Logic in 1889. In 1883 John Venn was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He wrote a history of his college, The Biographical History of Gonville and Caius College 1349-1897 (1897), and then began to compile a history of Cambridge University. He completed three volumes, and others continue the work, with the eighth volume now in preparation.

    Following is an excerpt from
    The Mathematical Universe
by William Dunham In the mid-nineteenth century, John Venn (1834-1923), a Fellow of Cambridge University, devised a scheme for visualizing logical relationships. Venn was a cleric in the Anglican Church, an authority on what was then called "moral science," and the compiler of a massive index of all Cambridge alumni. He was not terribly outstanding in mathematics. But, for better or worse, a single contribution has made him immortal. That contribution is the Venn diagram. It is as much a fixture of' today's textbooks as the title page or table of contents. A Venn diagram is simply a field within which circular areas represent groups of items sharing common properties. For instance, within the universe of all animals (the large rectangle in Figure V. 1), region C represents the camels, region B the birds, and region A the albatrosses. A glance at the diagram reveals that
    • All albatrosses are birds (region A lies entirely within region B
    • No camels are birds (regions C and B are nonintersecting).

    Name:
    John Venn Dates:
Born: August 4, 1834 in Hull, Humberside, England
Died: April 4, 1923 in Cambridge, England Biography: John Venn played a critical role in the development of modern logic by creating a system for diagramming that can test the validity of categorical syllogisms. Called Venn Diagrams, they are very useful for ensuring that an argument is valid. Venn diagrams use circles to represent sets, with the position and overlap of the circles showing the relationships between the sets. Here is an example of a Venn Diagram of the categorical proposition Some S are P The left circle represents the set of all members of S . The right circle represents the set of all members of P . The two circles overlap to represent the possibility that some members of one set may also be members of the other set. There is an X in the space of this overlap in order to represent the fact there actually is at least one element which is a member of both sets. If there were no

Scrivener Notaries London, England. , which is one of the oldest City livery companies, traces its origins as far back as 1373. The Company sets the examinations for prospective scrivener notaries and prescribes the other qualifications for entry to the profession. It is one of the few livery companies which still governs a "living" profession. The profession is a highly specialised one and has grown out of the unique position of the City of London as an international trading centre. Nearly all the work of scrivener notaries is of an international nature, although they are competent to advise on certain domestic matters as well. Scrivener notaries are trained not only in English law, but also in relevant aspects of the law of a foreign country. They are also examined in two foreign languages. This places them in a unique position to provide a bridge between the common law system prevalent in the English speaking world, and the civil law system found in many other parts of the world, including most countries in continental Europe and the whole of Latin America. Scrivener notaries are therefore able to certify documents in many languages and also to prepare legal documents -for example powers of attorney - in the form and language of the country in which they are to be used.
    Notarisation and Legalisation
Within its specialised areas of the law firm provides a full range of notarial services with a foreign element or cross-border context. In this context, the main areas of activity are:
