John Venn John Venn was an Englishman, born in London in 1834. He attended nearby schools and subsequently obtained a degree in Mathematics from Caius College, Cambridge in 1857. He was then elected as a fellow of his alma mater where he worked until his death in 1923. He was also ordained as a minister in 1857 but after a short period of religious work, he resigned his ministry and returned to teach logic at Cambridge. John Venn is best remembered for his Venn diagrams , which illustrate clearly the inter-relationships between the various types of sets in a universe set. The Venn diagrams are simplistic tools that made the understanding, learning and applying of the theory of sets easier.

The second of these is less original but the first was described by as probably his most enduring work on logic In 1883 Venn was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. About this time his career changed direction. He had already left the Church in 1870 but his interest now turned to history. He wrote a history of his college, publishing The Biographical History of Gonville and Caius College 1349-1897 in 1897.

Venn, John
He was a mathematician. He born at Hull, Humberside, England on August 4, 1834. He died at Cambridge, England on April 4, 1923. He majored in probability, logic. He is best known for Venn diagrams , pictorially representing the relationships between sets. History :
  • 1834: He born at Hull, Humberside, England on August 4, 1834. 1857: A fellow of Caius College, Cambridge (1857). 1866: He developed George Boole's symbolic logic, and in his Logic of Chance worked on the frequency theory of probability. 1923: He died at Cambridge, England on April 4, 1923.
Achievement : Venn Diagrams
A device for the visual representation of logical relations or a diagram illustrating the relations between sets.

Example I:
The diagram shows that set A is a subset of B, and B does not contain any elements of C, i.e. B and C are disjoint set.

Example II:
Union and intersection in set theory correspond to "or" and "and" in logic. This relationship enables particular elements and combination of elements from sets to be defined by logical statements.
Statement Logic Sets Elements p and q p^q P Q p or q p V q P U Q not p ~p P' not q ~q Q' p implies q p->q P' U Q' There is (2^n)-1 disjoints set (without the empty set). n=4 =>(2^4)-1=15

Venn's Life
John Venn was born August 4, 1834, in Hull, Humberside, England, to a prominent Anglican family. When he was young, his father, Henry Venn, moved to London in order to take up the occupation of honorary secretary to the Church Missionary Society. Venn began his education in London, at Sir Roger Cholmley's School, which is now known as Highgate School. In 1853, after graduation from high school, Venn enrolled in Gonville and Caius College, in Cambridge. He was elected a mathematical scholar in 1854 and by 1857 he had gained his Bachelor of the Arts degree. Also in 1857, Venn was elected a Fellow of the College and remained a Fellow for the rest of his life. Venn's family background led him to be ordained as a deacon at Ely in 1858, and as a priest in 1859. After that, he held offices at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and Mortlake, Surrey until 1862, when he returned to the Cambridge as a college lecturer in moral sciences. For the next thirty years, Venn became interested in logic. He published three standard texts based upon this topic. He wrote
