On Friday, February 7th, 2003, the Dutch mathematical community honours B.L. van der Waerden with a day of lectures in the Academiegebouw of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen . The building is located at Broerstraat 5 map ], which can be reached by taking bus 3 or 11 from the Centraal Station to the Grote Markt , or by a 10 minute walk.

'Zoals van vele aanzienlijke families, was de stamvader van het geslacht In de Sterre waard in de belangrijkste plaatselijke herberg: In dit geval "de Sterre" in de Rechtestraat te Eindhoven. Dit pand werd later ook wel "de Grote Sterre" genoemd, ter onderscheiding van "de Kleine Sterre". Het was een ontmoetingspunt van kooplieden, vergaderplaats voor schepenen, raden en gilden, een trefpunt voor de kleine eindhovense bovenlaag. In de stadsrekeningen wordt meermalen gesproken van de verteringen in de Sterre.De namen In de Sterre en van der Sterre lopen door elkaar tot ongeveer 1620-1640, waarna de laatste naam alleen gebruikt wordt.
Het wapen van der Sterre luidt : Een beurtelings gekanteelde rode dwarsbalk op goud, waarboven een vijfpuntige ster in rood schildhoofd. Zo komt het wapen in origineel voor te Eindhoven in 1610 en 1611. In Taxandria 1907, p. 230 is de ster zespuntig afgebeeld. liet is naar deze afbeelding dat ik de kleuren heb genomen. Johannes Chrysostomus van der Sterre voerde dit wapen in zijn kwartieren I en IV, doch had in II en III een leeuw, wellicht ontleend aan zijn grootmoeder Margriet de Leeuw.' NB: onderstaand overzicht is redactioneel bewerkt, waarbij onder andere de nummering is aangepast en de noten zijn weggelaten, zie daarvoor de oorspronkelijke publicatie.

Died: 12 Jan 1996 in Zurich, Switzerland
As a school pupil B L van der Waerden showed remarkable promise and he developed for himself the laws of trigonometry. He studied mathematics at the universities of Amsterdam and Göttingen from 1919 until 1925. The year 1924 he spent in Göttingen studying with Emmy Noether . His doctorate, supervised by Hendrik de Vries, was awarded by Amsterdam for a thesis on the foundations of algebraic geometry . In 1928 he received his habilitation from Göttingen. The year 1928 was a busy one for van der Waerden. He received a position at the University of Rostock but was appointed to a lectureship at Groningen in the same year. In 1931 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Leipzig where he became a colleague of Heisenberg Before and after World War II van der Waerden had problems as a foreigner from the Nazis. Although working in Germany he refused to give up his Dutch citizenship and his life was made difficult. After the War van der Waerden worked for Shell in Amsterdam in applied mathematics. In 1947 he visited the USA going to Johns Hopkins University. He returned in 1948 to a chair of mathematics at Amsterdam where he remained until 1951. In 1950 Karl Fueter

The branch of pure mathematics known as Ramsey theory concerns the existence of highly regular patterns in sufficiently large sets of randomly selected objects, whether they are gatherings of people, piles of pebbles, stars in the night sky, or sequences of numbers generated by the throw of a die. Patterns can arise out of randomness in a variety of ways. On a clear, moonless night, we see thousands of stars scattered across the sky. With so many stars visible, it's not particularly difficult to pick out groups that appear in a certain pattern: four stars that nearly form a straight line or a square, six stars that define a cross, seven stars in the shape of a dipper. The human imagination fills in the rest, connecting the dots to create a menagerie of celestial creatures that inhabit the sky. Ramsey theory goes further by proving the existence of highly regular mathematical patterns among sets of integers and other mathematical objects. Indeed, it implies that complete disorder is impossible. Somehow, no matter how complicated, chaotic, or random something appears, deep within that morass lurks a smaller entity that has a definite structure. Striking regularities are bound to arise even in a universe without rules. Dutch mathematician Bartel L. van der Waerden (1903-1996) was for one of the first to identify such a pattern among integersone that involves arithmetic progressions (or sequences) in sets of numbers. An arithmetic progression is a sequence of numbers in which each number is bigger (or smaller) than the number before it by a constant amount. For example, the sequence of integers 3, 5, 7 is a three-term arithmetic progression in which the difference between successive terms is 2.

Gebuckelt und breitschultrig sitzt sie da und blickt durch ihre runde Nickelbrille ganz knapp am Betrachter vorbei. Das Haar ist zurückgestrichen, so daß die Stirn frei liegt. Die Fotografie scheint recht gut das auffällige Äußere einer Mathematikerin wiederzugeben, die die Algebra dieses Jahrhunderts ganz entscheidend geprägt hat. "Ihre absolute, sich jedem Vergleich entziehende Einzigartigkeit ist nicht in der An ihres Auftretens nach außen hin zu erfassen, so charakteristisch dieses zweifellos war", schreibt ihr Schüler Bartel van der Waerden später. "Ihre Eigenart erschöpft sich auch keineswegs darin, daß es sich hier um eine Frau handelt, die zugleich eine hochbegabte Mathematikerin war, sondern liegt in der Natur ihres Denkens und dem Ziel ihres Wollens." In ihren Biographien lesen wir, ihre Stimme sei "rauh" gewesen, ihre Art "nie sentimental, sondern burschikos". Gerühmt wird ihre Güte und Gastfreundschaft: "Berühmt, geradezu sprichwörtlich waren gewaltige Schüsseln von Pudding, bei dessen Verzehr höchste Mathematik in einer Mansardenwohnung getrieben wurde." Ihre Vorlesungen hätten dagegen aus einer Aneinanderreihung halber Sätze bestanden, wodurch "nur eine kleine Zahl von schon gereiften Hörern ihrem Vortrag zu folgen vermochte". Doch wer dabeiblieb, der bekam Mathematik vom Feinsten geboten.
