Curving beyond Fermat's last theorem.(mathematicians offer proof of Taniyama-Shimura theorem)(Brief Article) Author/s: Issue: Oct 2, 1999 When Andrew Wiles of Princeton University proved Fermat's last theorem several years ago, he relied on recently discovered links between Pierre de Fermat's centuries-old conjecture concerning whole numbers and the theory of so-called elliptic curves (SN: 11/5/94, p. 295). Establishing the validity of Fermat's last theorem involved proving aspects of the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture, which focuses on properties of elliptic equations. Now, four mathematicians have extended this aspect of Wiles' work, offering a proof of the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture for all elliptic curves rather than just particular types. The Taniyama-Shimura theorem "is one of the major results of 20th-century mathematics," says Joe P. Buhler of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, Calif. "It verifies a truly surprising connection between disparate objects and, along the way, has all sorts of consequences in number theory."

Back cover: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR "Mesmerizing.... Murakami's most ambitious attempt yet to stuff all of modern Japan into a single fictional edifice." - Washington Post Book World Japan's most highly regarded novelist now vaults into the first ranks of international fiction writers with this heroically imaginative novel, which is at once a detective story, an account of a disintegrating marriage, and an excavation of the buried secrets of World War II. In Tokyo suburb a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife's missing cat. Soon he finds himself looking for his wife as well in a netherworld that lies beneath the placid surface of Tokyo. As these searches intersect, Okada encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists: a psychic prostitute; a malevolent yet mediagenic politician; a cheerfully morbid sixteen-year-old girl; and an aging war vetern who has been permanently changed by the hideous things he witnessed during Japan's forgotten campaign in Manchuria. Gripping, prophetic, suffused with comedy and menace

Issue The extraordinary story of Fermat's Last Theorem
Next month Andrew Wiles will be honoured for solving the most notorious problem in mathematics. Simon Singh tells the story of the Englishman obsessed by a riddle that confounded the world's greatest minds for more than three centuries Andrew Wiles's solution to Fermat's Last Theorem has been called the proof of the century. It is the mathematical equivalent of splitting the atom or finding the structure of DNA. It is the culmination of a struggle which involved generations of mathematicians, and which has influenced every area of mathematics. Undoubtedly the solution is a triumph of modern mathematics, but for Wiles it also has tremendous personal meaning. It is the realisation of a childhood dream, the end of an obsession which dominated his life. Wiles was born in Cambridge in 1953. Although strongly influenced by his father, a theologian, it was his mother, a maths teacher, who inspired his enthusiasm for numbers. The young Wiles quickly polished off the problems he was given at school, and would then amuse himself by inventing his own questions. When he was 10, he visited his local library and borrowed

Educational Sciences Major of this course provides students with a curriculum well-structured as a master's course. This major is established on the basis of the three undergraduate majors (Education major, Social education major and Educational psychology major) of Department of Educational Sciences in School of Education, Waseda University. The significance of this major is to contribute to the high-skill training and orientation of educational professionals working in secondary education, or professionals of life-time education. Therefore, this major has the following three objectives: training of human resources who will meet the demands in educational fields of schools or society, orientation for teachers at work, and researches by them on theoretical issues. The curriculum of this major is considerately constructed to connect practices of education and educational theories, and each seminar and research instruction are planned with care so that students can be prepared to and have perspective for the problems at issue in educational fields. The characteristic of this major is that practical and theoretical subjects are allocated on its priority.
