Robert Simson
Mathematician. Born in West Kilbride (North Ayrshire) and educated at the University of Glasgow, where he was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics (1711). He worked in the field of geometry. Simson enjoyed the company of his serious-minded male friends, playing whist on Friday evenings, walking to Anderston every Saturday and hosting dinner parties. He retired from his chair having held it for fifty years in 1761. He died in Glasgow and left his large collection of books and papers to the University. His name is remembered in Simson's Line , a mathematical concept encountered by William Wallace (1768 - 1843).

Robert Simson His father had intended that Robert should enter the church, and it was only by accident that his interests turned to mathematics. As a student of theology he was required to produce written work for his teachers. This he found unsatisfying, since he felt the arguments to be inconclusive and speculative. For recreation he turned first to a book on oriental philology, where he found statements that could be shown to be true or false, but this was not wholly satisfying and at that stage he had recourse to mathematics and Euclid 's Elements. He then set to work to study mathematics seriously, but he had to do this on his own, since at that time, for some reason, there were no lectures given on the subject by the professor Robert Sinclair. During his first year as a student in Glasgow Robert Simson was involved in a rather interesting incident which shows that, even before the Union of the Parliaments, Scottish as well as English students celebrated the 5th of November with fireworks. On emerging from a close that night Robert was hurt in the face by shot from a pistol belonging to a fellow student Arthur Tran, who with a group of other students was firing a pistol and letting off squibs. They were hauled before the Faculty where Tran agreed that he had fired the pistol, and that he had said

The following are the names of the men who attended the meetings of
the Laggan Presbytery between the years of 1672 and 1700 as ruling
Elders or as commissioners, together with the names of the
congregations which they represented. they were doubtless the leading
men in the districts in which they lived, and their names deserve to be held in remembrance on account of the part which they took in laying foundations of Presbyterianism in the Laggan, and for the services which they so cheerfully rendered, without fee or reward, amid much persecution and many difficulties, in maintaining a preached gospel in troublous times. In all of these congregations there are

accept this dignity at the hands of a democracy, refused the offer. Simson, bitterly disappointed at the outcome of his mission, resigned his seat in the Frankfort parliament, but in the summer of the same year was elected deputy for Konigsberg in thepopular chamberof the PrussianLandtag. Here he soon made his mark as one of the best orators in that assembly. A member of the short-lived Erfurt parliament of 1850, he was again summoned to the presidential chair. His political career coincides with the era of German struggles towards unity. As a politician he was one of the leaders of modern Liberalism, and though always loyal when appeals were made to patriotism, such as government demands for the army, he remained obdurate on constitutional questions; and he resolutely opposed the reactionary policy of the Prussian Conservatives. On his retirement from the presidency of the Reichsgericht, he left Leipzig and made his home in Berlin, where he died on the 2nd of May 1899. His Life was written by his son, Bernard von Simson, under the title Eduard von Simson, Erinnerungen aus seinem Leben (I 900).

Professor James Clow, the successor of Adam Smith in the Chair of Logic at Glasgow, writes the forward to this book; he was a man of great ability, having been chosen, quite possibly on the recommendation of Adam Smith, to edit these highly important works of Simson. The book was printed at the cost of Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl Stanhope (1714-1786) of Chevening, Kent, the mathematician, who was a friend of both Simson and Adam Smith, and was in correspondence with Adam Smith at the time the editor was being chosen. Adam Smith had a copy of this book in his Library.
