He read Ramanujan 's collected papers and was not only greatly impressed by the mathematics he read but also he was intrigued by Ramanujan 's personality which he described as having "the air of mystery". Inspired by reading about Ramanujan and reading his work, Selberg began to make his own mathematical explorations. Another major influence on Selberg's mathematical development was a lecture by Hecke at the International Mathematical Conference in Oslo in 1936. Selberg undertook his doctoral research at the University of Oslo. He was appointed a research fellow in 1942, the year before the award of his doctorate. He remained in this post until 1947 when he married and went to the United States. Selberg spent the academic year 1947-48 at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. The following year he spent as associate professor of mathematics at Syracuse University, returning to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton in 1949 as a permanent member. In 1951 Selberg was promoted to professor at Princeton. In 1950 Selberg was awarded a Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians at Harvard. The Fields Medal was awarded for his work on generalisations of the sieve methods of Viggo Brun, and for his major work on the zeros of the

Email In 1821 the Quakers community in the Stavanger area of Norway sent two members, Cleng Peerson and Knud Olsen Eide, over to America to explore the possibility of emigration in order to avoid religious persecution. Eide died soon after arriving in America but Peerson was able to return with encouraging news about the country. Cleng Peerson went back to organize the buying of land. On 4th July, 1825, a 52 foot sloop, Restauration , left Stavanger, with fifty-two Norwegians opposed to the Lutheran Church. Ninety-eight days later the ship arrived in New York where Peerson gave them the news that he had acquired land in Kendall, 35 miles north-west of Rochester. Over the next few years Kendall became a stopover on the way to the Middle West. Peerson also helped to organize another Norwegian settlement on the Fox River in Illinois.

Next: Erdos Number Up: Human Interest Previous: Indiana bill sets the Fields Medal Historical Introduction This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.
