Julius Schauder was born into a Jewish family. His father, Samuel Schauder, was a lawyer and Julius attended secondary school in Lvov. At this time Lvov was in Galicia, the part of partitioned Poland which was under Austrian control. Schauder was still at school when World War I started but when he graduated from school in 1917 he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army. He was with the army in the north of Italy when he was taken prisioner by the Italians. After the collapse of Austria, Schauder joined a new Polish army which was being organised in France. He returned to Poland with this army in 1919, by this time the country of Poland had been reestablished and it was to a Polish Lvov that Schauder went. He entered the Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov and worked for his doctorate under Steinhaus. After obtaining his doctorate in 1923 with a thesis The theory of surface measure

Dedicated to the memory of my teacher, Juliusz Schauder Before I give my personal reminiscences I would like to recall briefly what is known about Schauder's life (cf. [ ] and [ ]). I will not write here about his work, since this would take us too much aside (for this cf., e.g., [ ] and [ ]; unfortunately, neither text is in English: one is in French and the other in Japanese !). I will begin by quoting his friend and collaborator, Jean Leray (cf. [ ], p.11):

Otwórz do druku Preface The present volume contains a selection of papers submitted by the participants of the Third Polish Symposium on Nonlinear Analysis held in £ód¼, January 29-31, 2001, and organized by the Faculty of Mathematics of the £ód¼ University and the Juliusz Schauder Center of Nonlinear Studies at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruñ.
The main purpose of this Symposium was to integrate the large group of Polish researchers interested in different aspects of nonlinear problems, to present their recent results and to create a convenient platform for the exchange of scientific information and experience. Nonlinear Analysis is a major branch of mathematics encompassing various problems arising in mathematical, functional and convex analysis, topology, fixed point theory and their applications in the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations, inclusions and the dynamical systems, control and game theories. There is a number of strong Polish scientific centers where these topics are extensively studied.
During the Symposium a special session celebrating the 60-th anniversary of Professor Lech Górniewicz was organized. Professor Górniewicz, one of the leading specialists in the field of Nonlinear Analysis, is the head and a co-founder (together with Professor Andrzej Granas) of the Schauder Center, the Managing Editor of the journal "Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis" published by the Schauder Center and one of the persons promoting the development of nonlinear studies in Poland. The contributing authors and the editors are proud to dedicate this volume to Professor Górniewicz.

This indicates the geographical distribution and mutual influence of the leading Polish mathematicians, as well as the areas in which they were active. The latter are divided into logic, set theory, topology, functional analysis, classical analysis, differential equations, differential geometry, and applied mathematics. The choice is confined to those mathematicians who passed away. World War II was disastrous for Polish mathematics in every respect. Over 25 research mathematicians were shot or died in concentration camps or prisons. Victims included in this poster are marked by an asterisk. A number of others dispersed by the war did not return to Poland.
    Warsaw School of Mathematics
The term Warsaw School of Mathematics is used to describe a group of mathematicians working in logic, set theory, point-set topology and real functions in the 1920's and 1930's. Their journal was Fundamenta Mathematicae (founded in 1920),the first specialized mathematical journal in the world.
