Dan Quillen 's father trained as a chemical engineer but made his career as a physics teacher. Daniel attended Newark Academy and, from there, he entered Harvard University. He received his B.A. in 1961 and then began research at Harvard under R Bott's supervision. Quillen was awarded his Ph.D. for a thesis on partial differential equations in 1964 entitled Formal Properties of Over-Determined Systems of Linear Partial Differential Equations.
After receiving his doctorate, Quillen was appointed to the faculty of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He spent a number of years undertaking research at other universities which were to prove important in setting the direction of his research. He was a Sloan Fellow in Paris during academic year 1968-69 when he was greatly influenced by Grothendieck , a visiting member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton during 1969-70 when he was strongly influenced by Atiyah , and a Guggenheim Fellow again in France during 1973-74. Quillen at present works at the University of Oxford in England.

Module theory for nonunital rings
Room: Little Hall 121
Date: April 10, 2000
Time: 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Cookies and Coffee: at 3:30 in Little Hall 339 (The Atrium) Introductory Remarks by Graduate Research Professor John G. Thompson
Abstract: This lecture discusses a good module theory for a (not necessarily unital) ring A, which is obtained by suitably shrinking the category of all its modules so as to yield the the category of unitary modules when A is unital. When A is idempotent one obtains a nice abelian category consisting of the firm A-modules. The abelian categories arising from idempotent rings in this way are characterized by a theorem of Roos. Using firm module categories one can develop a theory of Morita equivalence for idempotent rings extending the usual Morita theory for unital rings. A natural question in this context is whether Morita equivalent rings have the same higher algebraic K-theory. This result turns out to be true for h-unital rings, and it may be viewed as a generalization of Suslin's excision theorem for higher algebraic K-theory of h-unital rings. Requirements 1) Regular attendance at and participation in seminar meetings.
2) By midnight each Monday, please send to the course electronic bulletin board three questions or comments, suitable for discussion, raised by that week's reading or other postings about it. To the extent possible, students should try to review these questions before the seminar.
3) Completion of three papers derived from the assigned reading. Click here for general paper guidelines.
4) One collaborative presentation using materials from the WorldWideWeb. Grading will be based on the papers in proportion to their length, as well as on participation, which is a significant component of the work of the course. Note: We encourage any student with a disability requiring accommodation in this class to contact one or both of us after class or during office hours. In addition, students may contact the Disabled Student Services Office in the Ley Student Center.

    Fields Medal
    Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.
