The complete review 's Review Edward FitzGerald's famous translation of the is a complex beast. Great poetry it is indeed, simple quatrains where East seems to meet West in a conjoining of Eastern mysticism and poetry and nineteenth century Western language and expression. There is little need to criticize or comment on FitzGerald's accomplishment itself, as the poems are among the best known in the English language. A few points are to be noted, however, first and foremost that FitzGerald's version is not eminently true to Khayyam's original. (For a somewhat more faithful rendering see our review of the

The great mathematician Omar Khayyam pondered this scale in two ways, one overt and one less so. First he pioneered a redesign of the Muslim calendar (the modern Muslim calendar is a lunar calendar not based on Khayyam's work), contemplating the minutiae of the imperfection of the then current system, finally coming up with a 33 year cycle of rhythms and leap years to be called the Jalili era after the Sultan. It was actually a little more accurate than the modern calendar we use today. The way to conceptualize such a long expanse of time, at least in the world of calendar reform, is to imagine slowly turning cycles that take so long to repeat that in each case they file off small imperfections in the calendar's precision. Khayyam's calendar loses a day every 5000 years (as opposed to 3,333 years for the Gregorian calendar to lose a day).
Khayyam also considered this scale of time in a way he might have been surprised to have others notice. Looking back from his 11th century vantage point, he was aware of more than 20 centuries worth of man's assaults on the riddles of natural orderon back to the Ancient Greeks and even a little ways into the mists of language. This was because Khayyam, like many Persian scientists of his day, was truly the custodian of humankind's accumulated knowledge, even that which had developed in Europe proper. It was clear that virtually every European institution was vulnerable to oblivion in the Dark Ages. Though they were clearly more than just care takers, Khayyam and others seem to have been aware of this cultural responsibility. Khayyam, Avicenna, and the rest added to that knowledge as wellKhayyam made several contributions to algebra, although most of his mathematical work has been lost.

His well known work, The Rubaiyat, is a beautiful continuous poem comprised of seventy-five quatrains (stanzas). His poetry was translated by Edward Fitzgerald in 1859. Fitzgerald was responsible for selecting the material of the Rubaiyat from Khayyam’s work and wove it into the poems that we read today. The Rubaiyat is often presented with beautiful illustrations. Khayyam’s observations of life are as meaningful in the present day as they were centuries ago. The following are some of my favorite stanzas:

    93. The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam[1]
The Rubaiyat of omar khayyam. Quality of Poetry. Poetry is nothingbut right words in right place. But Khayyam. omar khayyam's Poetry.
    http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~makhdoom/ruba1.html
    The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
Quality of Poetry Poetry is nothing but right words in right place. But, it is much more than mere words - it is food for the soul and a fire that keeps eternally burning at the gateway of love. It has touched my soul as well, as it has touched countless others' all over this kingdom of God. The people need poetry that will be their own secret to keep them awake forever, and bathe them in the bright-haired wave of its breathing. Poetry can communicate the actual quality of experience with a subtlety and precision unapproachable by any other means. But, if the poetry and the intelligence of the age lose touch with each other, poetry will cease to matter much and the age will be lacking in finer awareness. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, potery cleanses. Poetry is not concerned with telling with telling people what to do, but with extending our knowledge of good and evil, perhaps making the necessity for action more urgent and its nature more clear, but only leading us to the point where it is possible for us to make a rational and moral choice. Poetry keeps people alive, because poetry itself lives - it has a life of its own. It has an extra hand, which can caress or tickle. This hand can even clench and fight. The hand is hot! Take it or leave it.

Hikayat Omar Khayyam Tan Ah Beng N21: Choa Chu Kang Pty. Pemuda pertama, Nizamul Mulk , memilih menjadi wasir. Pemuda kedua, Hassan Sabah , memilih menjadi menteri.

    Omar Khayyam O I
    Pronunciation Key
Omar Khayyam , fl. 11th cent., Persian poet and mathematician, b. Nishapur. He was called Khayyam [tentmaker] probably because of his father's occupation. The details of his life are mostly conjectural, but he was well educated and became celebrated as the outstanding mathematician of his time. As astronomer to Sultan Malik Shah, he was one of a group that undertook to reform the calendar. Their work led to the adoption of a new era, the so-called Jalalian or Seljuk era, beginning Mar. 15, 1079. Although he wrote a number of important mathematical studies, Omar's fame as a scientist has been greatly eclipsed in the West by the popularity of his Rubaiyat, epigrammatic verse quatrains. The work was little known in Europe until the freely paraphrased English translation of them was first published by Edward FitzGerald in 1859. This influenced all subsequent evaluations of his poetry, even among native speakers of Persian, where FitzGerald's translation led to a new appreciation of his output. FitzGerald omitted many of the quatrains (which were independent and unconnected) and rearranged them into a unity expressing his conception of Omar's philosophy; it is, however, impossible to establish definitely that many of the nearly 500 quatrains attributed to Omar are really his work. The hedonism of his verse often masks his serious reflections on metaphysical issues. The verses have been offered in literally hundreds of editions. See study by A. Dashti (tr. 1972).

"The great charm of alt ancient literatures, one often thinks, Is the finding of ourselves in the past. It is as if the fable of repeated and recurring lives were true; as if in the faith, or unbelief, or merriment, or despair, or courage, or cowardice of men long dead, we heard the echoes of our own thoughts, and the beating of hearts that were once our own This may explain, in part, the popularity to-day of Omar Khayyam, the Poet-Astronomer of Persia. Genre: Arab vocals in a chamber music setting. A n Iranian native now residing in Paris, Abed Azrié is endowed with one of those utterly unforgettable and hair-raising voices. While narrow in scope, his rich baritone is extremely expressive and emotive, charged with a gentle but very penetrating power. This emotional intensity bonds naturally with his penchant for setting to music Arabian poems with strong mystical leanings. Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat one of literature's truly famous collections of spiritual poetry, not unlike equally well-loved and translated works by Hafiz, Kabir, Rumi and Tagore served as the conceptual inspiration and lyrical source for eight of the nine tracks. The liner notes recount that Khayyam, the son of a tent-maker, was born in 1040 in Nishapur/Persia to become, at the age of thirty, "an unparalleled scholar, geometrician, physicist, mathematician, philosopher and man of medicine". He composed his quatrains of spiritual inebriation in literal wine taverns that, during a time of great orthodoxy, served as the meeting grounds for freethinking rebellious men. The lyrics from "Between yesterday and tomorrow" are a great example for the pervasive and strangely intoxicated yet relaxed mood of the album: "Keep yourself from worries and sorrow, seize with all your might this fleeting life, yesterday is already far, tomorrow not yet arrived; be happy for a moment, this moment is your life; fill the bountiful cup, life is disgrace, drunkenness grace."
