Tale resistenza aumenta o diminuisce a seconda del metallo usato per i fili, per uno stesso metallo è inversamente proporzionale alla sezione e direttamente proporzionale alla lunghezza del filo. Nel circuito a sinistra la corrente della pila deve percorrere il filo teso tra due spinotti posti sulla tavoletta di legno prima di raggiungere la lampadina. The Prussian minister of education announced that "a professor who preached such heresies was unworthy to teach science." Ohm's main interest was current electricity, in 1827 he was able to show from his experiments that there was a simple relationship between resistance, current and voltage. Ohm's famous law states that the flow of current is directly proportional to voltage and inversely proportional to resistance. Using this law, scientists could for the first time work out the amounts of current, voltage and resistance in electric currents, and the variations of one through changes in the others. A seguito del suo allontanamento, Ohm non segue studi ordinati, interessandosi quasi subito alla fisica matematica, ma tuttavia nel 1811 riesce a laurearsi presso l'università di Erlangen e per molti anni si dedica, piuttosto malvolentieri, all'attività didattica, insegnando anche materie lontanissime dalla sua sfera di interessi.
