Otto Neugebauer became interested in mathematics while at school but, in 1917, he joined the Austrian army to avoid having to take his final school examinations. In 1918 the war ended and he became a prisoner of the Italians. He was held in a prison camp in Italy along with another Austrian who has achieved world-wide fame, namely Ludwig Wittgenstein. Courant Harald Bohr , and Aleksandrov . His friendship with Harald Bohr developed into a mathematical collaboration and they wrote a joint paper on almost periodic functions. It was to be Neugebauer's first and last paper on mathematics as such for his work at this point took a definite turn. Neugebauer was an expert in languages and he had studied Egyptian. It was natural, therefore, for Harald Bohr to ask his friend to review a publication on the Rhind papyrus. Once he had begun to study the work, Neugebauer realised that the subject which he wanted to work in was the history of mathematics. He approached Courant and Hilbert to see if he could work for his doctorate on the history of Egyptian unit fractions. They agreed to supervise such a project and Neugebauer received his doctorate for a dissertation on this topic in 1926.

A brief history of the Department
Otto Neugebauer , the founder and principal editor of the Zentralblatt fur Mathematik (in which all the world's publications in mathematics were reviewed), and already recognized as the world's leading historian of Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Greek mathematics, accepted a position at Copenhagen where he had a decade previously spent a year working on linear differential equations with constant coefficients and almost periodic right-hand sides in collaboration with Harald Bohr, Niels' brother. Neugebauer continued to edit the Zentralblatt fur Mathematik while in Copenhagen, but also finished there his fundamental investigation of ancient mathematical texts from Mesopotamia, the three volumes of Mathematische Keilschrift-Texte, and conceived of the project of publishing collections of all extant and known texts on mathematics and astronomy in Akkadian, the standard Mesopotamian language in the last two millennia B.C., and in Egyptian. When the Nazis threatened Denmark in 1939, Dean Richardson at Brown together with the American Mathematical Society arranged for Neugebauer to come to Providence to teach in Brown's Department of Mathematics and to transform the Zentralblatt into the American-based Mathematical Reviews

Allen, Richard Hinckley. Star Names, Their Lore and Meaning.
Dover Publications Inc., New York, 1963.
Allen's book was originally published in 1899 under the title Star Names and Their Meanings. Allen provides a history of the literary and mythological uses of the stars and constellations, including the history of the lunar and solar zodiacs, the legends associated with various constellations and star groups, and the history of astrology. Since the original publication of this book predates important astronomical discoveries from the Near and Far East, it is rather dated. However, the discussions are still enjoyable. Aveni, Anthony F. Skywatchers of Ancient Mexico.
University of Texas Press, Austin, Texas, 1980.
Aveni provides a good overview of Pre-Columbian astronomy in Mesoamerica. It is useful to compare Aveni's treatment of the Venus observations in the Dresden codex with his later much more illuminating interpretations in Conversing with the Planets . Aveni notes that a number of Mesoamerican buildings were constructed with Venus orientations which indicate that the orbit of Venus was the same as at present in the first and second millenia A.D., contrary to expectations of some Velikovskians that Venus might still be settling into its current orbit after an extended period as a "comet."
