Did you know . . .? Long before the calculator, logarithms were great mathematical labor-saving devices! Although there is evidence that logarithms were known in 8th century India, their invention as an aid to calculation is attributed to a Scottish nobleman named John Napier (1550-1617) in his Mirifici logarithmorum canonis descriptio (1614) and Mirifici logarithmorum canonis constructio (published posthumously in 1619). In collaboration with Oxford professor Henry Briggs, Napier refined his logarithms by constructing tables for logarithms in base 10. Napier is also credited with creating one of the earliest calculating machines ( "Napier's bones" ) and with the first systematic use of the decimal point Not a bad mathematical pedigree for a man who never finished university and who considered his most important work to be his Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation of St. John John Napier. (Source: http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/history/PictDisplay/Napier.html
Napier lived during an age of great innovation in the world of astronomy. Copernicus had published his theory of the solar system in 1543, and many astronomers were eagerly involved in calculating and re-calculating planetary positions based in the wake of Copernicus's ideas. Their calculations took up pages and pages and hours and hours of work.

John Napier 1550 - 1617 John Napier was the Scottish mathematician and inventor who invented logarithms, the decimal point, and Napier's Bones - a calculating instrument. Napier invented or proposed several military inventions: burning mirrors to set enemy ships on fire, special artillery that destroyed everything within a radius of four miles, bulletproof clothing, an early version of the tank, and a submarine-like device. John Napier also invented a hydraulic screw with a revolving axle for use in coal pits to lower water levels and Napier also worked on agricultural innovations to improve crops with manures and salt. John Napier
John Napier is best known for his invention of logarithms. His other mathematical contributions include: a mnemonic for formulas used in solving spherical triangles, two formulas known as Napier's analogies used in solving spherical triangles, an invention called Napier's bones used for mechanically multiplying dividing and taking square roots and cube roots, exponential expressions for trigonometric functions, and the decimal notation for fractions.

Sir John Napier
John Napier of Merchiston
Mathematician, inventor and astronomer. Born at Merchiston Castle (Edinburgh) into a wealthy family, Napier was the eldest son of Sir Archibald Napier (1534 - 1608). He was educated at St. Salvator's College, St. Andrews and became a staunch Calvinist. He devised "Napier's Rods" or "Napier's Bones" which permitted easy multiplication by addition. This led to his best remembered work: the concept of logarithms, which he described in Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio (1614). He also invented the decimal point and a hydraulic screw pump to remove water from coal mines. Napier also proposed a number of new weapons, including a device based on mirrors to set fire to enemy ships by focussing a high-intensity light beam, an armoured wagon and a submarine. He also experimented in agricultural improvement on his estates. His son to his first wife, Elizabeth, became the first Lord Napier. In 1572, he married Agnes Chisholm and they settled on his family estate at Gartness, near Killearn (Stirling). Napier was buried at St. Cuthbert's Church in Edinburgh.

Napier totiž odešel studovat do Evropy. Své vìdecké znalosti dal do správy svého majetku. Mj. experimentoval s vìdeckými metodami v zemìdìlství.

Biographies of Mathematicians - John Napier
Napier is best known for his invention of logarithms and for formulas used in solving spherical triangles. Napier was born in the Tower of Merchiston, now at the center of Napier University’s Merchiston campus, in 1550. At the age of 13 he went to St. Andrews studying at St. Salvator’s College for two years. It is thought he travelled in Europe between 1566-1571 perhaps studying in Paris or Holland but there is no corroborative evidence of this. He had a son called Archibald to his first wife Elizabeth, who became the first Lord Napier. He also had a daughter called Janet, about whom nothing is known beyond that. In 1572 he married his second wife Agnes Chisholm and they settled on his family estate at Gartness in Stirlingshire, bringing up five more sons and five daughters. Napier died in April 1617 and was buried at St. Cuthbert’s Church in Edinburgh. In his lifetime he was known as the Marvellous Merchiston, a well-deserved title, for his genius and imaginative vision encompassed a number of fields. Napier was educated at St Andrews University although he seems to have left without obtaining a degree. He then studied in Europe.
