Gabriel Mouton obtained his doctorate in theology in Lyon. However he spent much of his spare time studying mathematics and astronomy. He took holy orders and spent his whole career in St Paul's Church in Lyon. His most famous work Observationes diametrorum solis et lunae apparentium published in 1670 studied interpolation and a standard of measurement based on the pendulum. His methods of interpolation were similar to those used by Briggs in the construction of his logarithm tables. Mouton also produced 10 place tables of logarithmic sines and cosines and an astronomical pendulum of remarkable precision. Mouton was the first to propose the decimal system. He also suggested (1670) a standard linear measurement based on the length of the arc of one minute of longitude on the Earth's surface and divided decimally. As an astronomical observer he made accurate observations of the apparent diameter of the sun.

6. Scientific Disciplines
Primary: Mathematics, Astronomy
Mouton was a pioneer in research on natural and practical units of measurement. His Observationes diametrorum solis et lunae apparentium (1670) was the fruit of his astronomical observations and certain computational procedures he had developed. Mouton proposed to deduce the length of a terrestrial meridian from the variations of the length of a pendulum. A fraction of the terrestrial meridian would be adopted as the universal unit of length. The measuring procedures at the time were too unsatisfactory. The topic wouldn't be taken up again until 1790.
He determined with astronomical accuracy the apparent diameter of the sun at apogee.

    Président de la Fédération Nationale
    des Centres de Lutte contre le SIDA
    Summary by Theo Smart,
    Kirk N. Lawson, MBA;
    Douglas Dieterich, MD I The French Study Dr. Mouton set out to evaluate the effect of protease-based triple-drug therapy at 10 centers in the French Federation of AIDS Reference Centers. At each center, a study nurse, trained to collect epidemiologic, economic and clinical data, conducted monthly surveys on each patient, recording the number taking antiretrovirals or protease combinations as well as the number of hospital days, consultations, day-care hospitalizations, and ADEs. Data were collected on 7,757 patients, and the results were compiled by the head of each center. Since in France medical insurance is free for anyone with HIV, the problems with reimbursement for treatment or hospitalization common in the United States are generally not encountered. The costs were evaluated only on the basis of the national cost of drugs and services at each center. The study took place from September 1995 through September 1996, a period during which there were major changes in the use of antiretrovirals. Dr. Mouton compared data from the first and last months of the study to collect before-and-after snapshots. What he found was striking. (See Table A.)

    Jean Mouton belonged to one of the most extraordinary generations of composers the Western world has ever produced. The most famous of his contemporaries was Josquin des Prez, but they also included Jacob Hobrecht, Henricus Ysaac, Pierre de la Rue (all born within a few years of Mouton and Josquin), slightly older musicians such as Alexander Agricola, Loyset Compère and Johannes Martini, and slightly younger ones like Antoine Brumel and Antoine de Févin. It would be as idle to try to rank them as to debate the precedence of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven; all were superb composers with an important influence on their successors. But to ears attuned to the important shifts in musical style that occurred between the late-medieval sound-world of Guillaume Du Fay ( c. 1397–1474) and the early-modern sound-world of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina ( c.
