Emile Lemoine was educated at the Ecole Polytechnique graduating in 1860. He remained there teaching for six years when he retired through ill health. As a civil engineer he rose to the rank of chief inspector and in that capacity he was responsible for the gas supply to Paris. He worked in the gas inspection service from 1886 until 1896. A symmedian of a triangle from vertex A is obtained by reflecting the median from A in the bisector of the angle A . He proved that the symmedians are concurrent, the point where they meet now being called the Lemoine point. Among other results on symmedians in Lemoine's 1873 paper is the result that the symmedian from the vertex A cuts the side BC of the triangle in the ratio of the squares of the sides AC and AB . He also proved that if parallels are drawn through the Lemoine point parallel to the three sides of the triangle then the six points lie on a circle, now called the Lemoine circle. Its centre is at the mid-point of the line joining the Lemoine point to the circumcentre of the triangle.

Emile Michel Hyacinthe Lemoine (1840-1912) geometer
In order to appreciate Emile Lemoine's role in the subject of triangle geometry, it is helpful to start with a bird's eye view of the history of the subject. First, there was a wave of ancient Greek developments, as recorded in Euclid's Elements. The second wave began with the discovery of the Fermat point and continued into the early twentieth century. The third wave, now rolling, dates from the advent of computers. Lemoine has been called the originator of an enormous surge of interest in triangle geometry that took place during the second of the three waves. Lemoine did not publish original mathematical results after 1895, but in 1894, he helped C. A. Laisant establish the journal , and he served as its editor for several years. Many of Lemoine's contributions can be found in Nathan Altshiller Court, College Geometry, In addition to Lemoinian Geometry (14 pages in Chapter 10), Court presents a section of Historical and Bibliographical Notes, in which he writes: Proceedings pp. 90-91, and was also published in [

    Triangle Geometers
Euclid's Elements and other remnants of ancient Greek times contain theorems about triangles and descriptions of four triangle centers: centroid, incenter, circumcenter, and orthocenter. Later triangle geometers include Euler, Pascal, Ceva, and Feuerbach. In 1873, Emile Lemoine presented a paper "on a remarkable point of the triangle," now known as the Lemoine point or symmedian point. This paper, writes Nathan Altshiller Court ( College Geometry , page 304), "may be said to have laid the foundations...of the modern geometry of the triangle as a whole." Court also describes seminal papers by Henri Brocard and J. Neuberg and names Lemoine, Brocard, and Neuberg as the three co-founders of modern triangle geometry. A huge wave of interest and publications in triangle geometry swept through the last years of the 19th century but then collapsed during the early years of the 20th. Twenty-first century interests and transfigurations in triangle geometry are described in Philip J. Davis

    http://www.yorktaylors.free-online.co.uk/faguet.htm
In a dramatic review by M. Emile Faguet The author of le Détour and le Marché - namely M. Henri Bernstein - has just had a play performed by the Gymnase company, or rather it is a mixture of tragedy and vaudeville, which is perhaps not his Athalie or his Andromaque , his l'Amour veille or his les Sentiers de la vertue , but rather is more like his Nicomède , which is in no way, as you may perhaps have heard through hearsay, an entirely contemptible piece and is in no way the utter shame of the human spirit. So far does this piece reach, I do not say above the clouds, but in short has reached to the clouds, that there is a little exaggeration, but of a justifiable success, M. Bernstein's piece is swarming with improbabilities, but with a foundation of truth. It is in this that l'Affaire Lemoine differs from la Rafale , and, generally, from M. Bernstein's tragedies, as it does from a good half of Euripides's comedies, which swarm with truths, but are built on a foundation of improbabilities. Moreover it is the first time that one of M. Bernstein's pieces has interested people, who have avoided them up until now. Consequently, that swindler Lemoine, wishing to perpetrate a dupe with his claim of having discovered the means to manufacture diamonds, appealed... to the biggest owner of diamond mines in the world. As improbabilities go you will tell me that this is one of the greatest. And that's the first. At the very least you would think that this potentate, who has had his mind on the most important business affairs in the world, would send Lemoine packing, like the prophet Nehemia, who proclaimed from the walls of Jerusalem to those below who were offering him a ladder for him to come down:

    18. Letters To Monsieur Emile Straus
would have to request his services) as he is genuinely a man of science and a bearerof a Louis XIV name, I had written about him in my Affaire lemoine de Saint
    http://www.yorktaylors.free-online.co.uk/emiles.htm
Correspondence with Monsieur Émile Straus V Friday [29 October 1915.] Dear Sir, I thought of you immediately. But I didn't know whether you had told Mme Straus about it; I was sure that she would know, even if only through the papers. But I preferred to remain prudent and not risk delivering her a blow which could be so dangerous to such a delicate sensibility which would feel the pain of it for so long, because she is unfortunately not one of those people for whom the poem which she loves was written: "The dead no not endure long". But I commiserate with both of you so much over the loss of a friend like Hervieu; I have no words to express the incessant and infinite compassion which Mme de Pierrebourg inspires in me. Please share with Mme Straus my great respect and grateful affection. Marcel Proust. (1) Paul Hervieu died on Monday 25 October 1915. VII Dear Sir, You would be doing me an enormous favour if you could tell me whether, in your opinion, this contract legally prevents me (with the risk of lawsuits etc.) from publishing my second Quite simply , do I have the right ? (the right to leave Grasset). I ask you this (and in total confidence since I still haven't spoken to Grasset about it). Don't take the trouble of writing to me. Simply tell one of your servants to telephone me in the next few days: "M. Proust has the right" or else "M. Proust risks having to pay damages". And if that is too much trouble don't reply at all. Would you thank Mme Straus for her delightful letter? I hope to go to see her any day now. And that we will have to exchange "views" about Mme Estradère's appearance on the scene. There are names from our past which have ended up by becoming magnetic. They draw after them like iron filings a thousand inseparable and attractive memories. I saw Roye Danguillécourt again, poor Mme Lipmann. Goodbye my dear sir and please accept my grateful respect and my closely bound attachment.
