Claude E. Shannon Father of Information Theory Calude E. Shannon was born in Michigan on April 30, 1916. He was educated at University of Michigan in 1936 with B.S. degree, and studied electrical engineering and mathematics in MIT , received both his master's degree and his doctorate in 1940. His classic paper (based on Master thesis) "A Symbolic Analysis of Relay and Switching Circuits" showed how a logic machine could be built using switching circuits corresponding to the propositions of Boolean algebra. Shannon is the founding father of electronic communications age, his most influential paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" had built the solid foundation for information theory. He is an American mathematical engineer, whose work on technical and engineering problems within the communications industry, laying the groundwork for both the computer industry and telecommunications. Shannon joined the mathematics department at Bell Labs in 1941 and remained affiliated with the Labs until 1972. He became a visiting professor at MIT in 1956, a permanent member of the faculty in 1958, and a professor emeritus in 1978.. The mathematical theory of communication was the climax of Shannon's mathematical and engineering investigations. He is also the leading pioneer of artificial intelligence and machine learning, he is well-known for his clever design of electromechanical mouse "

Suppose that we have a random experiment with sample space S . The probability of an event is a measure of how likely the event is to occur when the experiment if run.

Mathematically, a probability measure (or distribution P for a random experiment is a real-valued function defined on the collection of of events that satisfies the following axioms:

The axioms are known as the Kolmogorov axioms , in honor of Andrey Kolmogorov Axioms 1 and 2 are really just a matter of convention; we choose to measure the probability of an event with a number between and 1 (as opposed, say, to a number between −5 and 7).     I began by reviewing the three "Kolmogorov axioms", (nonnegativity, total probability one rule, addition formula), and putting these into context. These axioms, due to the Russian mathematician Andrey Kolmogorov (1903 - 1987), represent the theoretical foundation of modern probability theory. The axioms turned out to be exactly what was needed to build a mathematically rigorous model for probabilistic experiments. From the axioms, one can derive further properties and formulas (complement rule, difference rule, union rule, inclusion-exclusion formula, ...). I gave several such derivations in class, and did some examples showing to compute probabilities using these rules along with some elementary set-theoretic reasoning.
    Reading assignment: If you have not done so, review the set-theoretic notation and terminology summarized on p. 19. This material covered in today's class corresponds roughly to the first part of 1.3, through Example 2.     22 February 2001 MAGDALENA HELMER From small beginnings: cloud formation is driven by turbulence Air passengers are familiar with it, cloud formation relies on it, and the dispersal of pollutants in water and the atmosphere is affected by it, but turbulence remains quite poorly understood. Now, Eberhard Bodenschatz and colleagues from Cornell University in New York have managed to take the first ever accurate measurements of particles moving in highly turbulent water "Our data may help engineers to design more efficient chemical reactors and combustion systems," says Bodenschatz. The results could also help to simulate how pollutants are likely to disperse, he adds. Turbulent flow is characterised by the rapid and unpredictable changes in speed and direction of the tiny particles within fluids the collective name for gases and liquids. But measuring the movements of these particles has been notoriously difficult to do. The problem lies in what Bodenschatz calls "intermittency" short, rare bursts of activity that make fluid particles a difficult subject for even the most hardworking detective to shadow. A particle might sit idly for some time before suddenly accelerating to a high speed and then stopping again all within a fraction of a second.

    Physicists Reconsider The Nature Of Turbulence
    The findings were reported in the March 25 issue of Nature. Up until Komogorov attempted to describe turbulence, physicists recognized four patterns of flow: still, steady convection, periodic convection, and turbulent convection. Each of these can be pictured by imagining a pan of water on a stove. When the burner is lit beneath the pan, the flow of the water will go through each of these transitions as it is heated. Among the factors that define the transitions are abrubt changes in the efficiency of heat distribution. Another defining factor is the complexity of the flow, which increases and becomes more and more disordered in each subsequent phase. Essentially what Kolmogorov did was explain the flow pattern and transport properties of turbulence and distinguish turbulence from chaotic flow patterns, resulting in five recognized states.

    Author/s: Keith Devlin Antievolutionists argue that humanity could not have evolved by chance. But just how would one recognize the presence of design? IT IS FASHIONABLE AND COMFORTING for those who work in science to believe that creationists have nothing to support their view except a literal and idiosyncratic interpretation of the Book of Genesis. But the creationist critique of evolution by natural selection draws on a variety of disciplines, from paleontology and biology to geology and astrophysics. One of the most familiar and powerful arguments put forward against evolution is, in fact, mathematical: even if evolution can work in special casesor so the argument goesthe probability that evolution by natural selection could have given rise to human beings is simply too small to support credible belief. Such complex creatures could not be the result of essentially random acts, say the creationists, so a designer must have been guiding the process. The standard counterargument is that the long odds are irrelevant, since we humans are already here to question our origins. It's like going up to Larry Ross, the Michigan man who won half of the $363 million Big Game lottery this past May, and telling him that, because the odds against any one person's winning are 76 million to one, he could not possibly have won through luck alone. Even if the numbers on the winning ticket are not enough to convince a skeptic, a simple analysis can show why the long odds don't rule out chance. In a fair game, with 76-million-to-one odds and, say, 25 million tickets sold, it is quite probable that someone, somewhere will win.
