He studied at Cambridge, became one of the "Bloomsbury group', and lectured in economics. In both World Wars he was an adviser to the Treasury, and his views on a planned economy influenced Roosevelt's "New Deal' administration. Review of Robert Skidelsky, John Maynard Keynes: Hopes Betrayed and The Economist as Saviour

February 2001 Robert Skidelsky (1983), John Maynard Keynes: Hopes Betrayed (London: Macmillan: Robert Skidelsky (1992), John Maynard Keynes: The Economist as Saviour (London: Macmillan: My review of volume 3 A couple of months ago I wrote a less-than-totally-enthusiastic review of the third volume of Robert Skidelsky's Keynes biographyRobert Skidelsky (2000), John Maynard Keynes: Fighting for Britain (London: Macmillan: 0333604563). I wrote that I was disappointed: that "I was expecting this to be a great book: as stunning as the first two volumes.... But it was not. Do not get me wrong: it is still a good book, well worth reading. Anyone who loved Skidelsky's first two volumes will like this one..." Now let me repair the damage by writing a totally enthusiastic, totally adulatory review of Skidelsky's first two volumes. He gives us John Maynard Keynes's life, entire. And he does so with wit, charm, control, scope, and enthusiasm. You read these books and you know Keyneswho he was, what he did, and why it was so important. The place to start is with the observation that John Maynard Keynes appeared to live more lives than any of the rest of us are granted.

Zo schreef hij in 1919 de "The Economic consequences of the Peace".

I am a big fan of looking at the social and historical impact of any one person or event. The Michael Wilhoitte book “ Members of the Tribe ” and other research revealed many peculiar places where queerness played a part, and appears in so many stories this world has written. I hope the "Q-seum" raises quizzical eyebrows and a few gasps of “I didn’t know that!”

R. H. Coase
John Maynard Keynes is best known for his book The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money . In this book Keynes offered the economics profession, for the first time, a theory of demand and supply for output as a whole; he showed that if demand falls short of supply, output may have to run down to bring them back into balance; hence the possibility that 'the economic system may find itself in stable equilibrium ... at a level below full employment'. One result of Keynes's book was the creation of a new approach to the of analysis of the economy: macroeconomics At the root of Keynes's theory is idea that an equilibrium level of income and output need not correspond to a situation of full employment, and indeed that the economy is very likely to get stuck in a low-level unemployment equilibrium trap, there being no spontaneous, self adjusting mechanism that will necessarily drive the economy to employ the entire work force and to utilize the entire capital stock. Added to this is Keynes's demonstration of the 'paradox of thrift' - in an economy with unemployment more saving means more, not less, unemployment. The principal implication of Keynes's analysis was that fiscal and monetary policy could be use to correct the aggregate instability exhibited by market economies and help stabilize the economy at full employment. Keynes's study of monetary aggregates of investment, savings etc, also led to the development of national accounts.

JOHN MAYNARD KEYNES
Syllabus: Spring 2002
Professor E. Roy Weintraub
Office: Social Sciences
Phone (and voice mail): 660-1838; E-mail: erw@econ.duke.edu
This seminar will examine the life and work of one of the truly important figures of the twentieth century, John Maynard Keynes. The context of the development of Keynes's thought in late Victorian Cambridge, and the influence of Moore and the Apostles, sets the stage for an examination of Keynes's emerging role as government advisor, journalist, teacher, and economist. The seminar will study his connections to the Bloomsbury Group as well as his non-economic writings, both political and biographical. The emergent focus will be Keynes's influential General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money , and its intellectual background; this work is a major text of this century's intellectual life, and so it will be read directly, and not from a modern perspective of, for example, "Keynesian economics versus Monetarism."
Required reading will be the two volume biography of Keynes by Skidelsky; there will also be readings of various portions of Keynes's writings found in The Collected Works of John Maynard Keynes . Secondary readings will include G. E. Moore's Principia Ethica , biographies of other Bloomsbury figures like Strachey and the Woolfs, and essays on Keynes in books like that edited by his nephew Milo Keynes.

    Modern History Sourcebook:
    John Maynard Keynes:
The Economic Consequences of the Peace, 1920
John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) was an important English economist. In his The Economic Consequences of the Peace he attacked the effects of Versailles Settlement for its effects on Germany. His remarks were probably correct, but it is also probably that discomfort among the intellectual elite of the victor countries contributed to a lack of resistance when Hitlerism took over Germany.
This chapter must be one of pessimism. The Treaty includes no provisions for the economic rehabilitation of Europe, - nothing to make the defeated Central Empires into good neighbors, nothing to stabilize the new States of Europe, nothing to reclaim Russia; nor does it promote in any way a compact of economic solidarity amongst the Allies themselves; no arrangement was reached at Paris for restoring the disordered finances of France and Italy, or to adjust the systems of the Old World and the New. The Council of Four paid no attention to these issues, being preoccupied with others, - Clemenceau to crush the economic life of his enemy, Lloyd George to do a deal and bring home something which would pass muster for a week, the President to do nothing that was not just and right. It is an extraordinary fact that the fundamental economic problems of a Europe starving and disintegrating before their eyes, was the one question in which it was impossible to arouse the interest of the Four. Reparation was their main excursion into the economic field, and they settled it as a problem of theology, of politics, of electoral chicane, from every point of view except that of the economic future of the States whose destiny they were handling....
