William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin) . Born in Belfast, Ireland, this British physicist began the papers on the laws of conservation and dissipation of energy. He published 661 papers on scientific subjects and patented 70 inventions. Knighted (as Lord Kelvin) by Queen Victoria for his work on the electrical engine, he was in charge of laying the first successful transatlantic cable in 1866. Thomson, Sir William, Lord Kelvin of Largs (1824-1907), britischer Mathematiker und Physiker. Thomson wurde am 26. Juni 1824 in Belfast geboren und an den Universitäten von Glasgow und Cambridge ausgebildet. Von 1846 bis 1899 war er Professor für theoretische Physik an der Universität von Glasgow. Thomson studierte die mathematische Theorie der Signalübertragung durch Kabel und ersann Verbesserungen für die Herstellung elektrischer Kabel sowie die Konstruktion des Spiegelgalvanometers und des Heberschreibers. Von 1857 bis 1858 und von 1865 bis 1866 war er als wissenschaftlicher Berater beim Verlegen der Telegraphenkabel im Atlantik angestellt. Childhood: Born on 26 June 1824 in Belfast , Ireland, William Thomson became one of the leading physical scientists and greatest teachers of his time. His family were committed to liberal political reform and personal advancement. Both he and his elder brother James Thomson (1822-1892), who also became a prominent physicist, were educated at home by their father. In 1832, Thomson's father took up the post of Professor of mathematics at Glasgow University . Thomson himself entered the University two years later at the age of ten to study Natural Philosophy (Science). He was elected to the position of Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow, at the age of 22, where he created the first physics laboratory in a British University. He spent most of his life there.

Thomson patented 70 inventions and published 661 papers in all, the first of which was at the age of 16. He did important research in

Introductory Note Lord Kelvin's activities were remarkable for both profundity and range. A large number of his results are to be appreciated only by the highly skilled mathematician and physicist; but his speculations on the ultimate constitution of matter; his statement of the principle of the dissipation of energy, with its bearing upon the age of life on the earth; his calculations as to the age of the earth itself, and much more, are of great general interest. His fertility in practical invention was no less notable. He contrived a large number of instruments; his services to navigation and ocean telegraphy being especially valuable. Long before his death he was recognized as the most distinguished man of science of his time and country, and he was also the most loved. Part I Evening Lecture To The British Association At The Southampton Meeting Friday, August 25, 1882 One of the most interesting points of tidal theory is the determination of the currents by which the rise and fall is produced, and so far the sailor's idea of what is most noteworthy as to tidal motion is correct: because before there can be a rise and fall of the water anywhere it must come from some other place, and the water cannot pass from place to place without moving horizontally, or nearly horizontally, through a great distance. Thus the primary phenomenon of the tides is after all the tidal current; and it is the tidal currents that are referred to on charts where we have arrow-heads marked with the statement that we have "very little tide here," or that we have "strong tides" there.

Lord Kelvin (William Thomson) was one of the founders of modern physics, probably the greatest applied scientist of the Victorian era. He became a student at Glasgow University when only 11 years old, and later became Professor of Natural Philosophy there - a position he held for 50 years. He was offered, and declined, the Cavendish Chair at Cambridge three times, but instead persuaded all the major scientists of the time to come to Glasgow. Kelvin had an excellent grasp of all aspects of physics: heat, light, sound, electricity. In his early days he performed experiments in electric lighting, thermodynamics and electrodynamics. He studied radioactivity, and encouraged the Curies in their experiments with radium. He was a very talented scientific insturment designer, and later became associated with James White's company (founded in 1849), when he realised many of the instruments he was devising in the laboratory could be adapted for manufacture. Early on, they made rangefinders for Professors Barr and Stroud (who had formed a company, Barr and Stroud, in response to an advert for an efficient rangefinder placed by the War Office in 1888). It was Kelvin's involvement in submarine telegraphy, and the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866, which made him internationally famous however, as well as his redesigned nautical compass and sounding equipment

The Kelvin absolute temperature scale derives its name from the title, Baron Kelvin of Largs , that Thomson received from the British government in 1892. Born: 26 June 1824 in Belfast, Ireland Died: 17 Dec 1907 in Netherhall (near Largs), Ayrshire, Scotland) Thomson attended Glasgow University from the age of 10. While there he read Fourier's work on the application of abstract mathematics to heat flow. In 1841 Thomson entered Cambridge and took his BA in 1845. In that year he read George Green's work which had a major influence on Thomson's work. Thomson was appointed professor of natural philosophy at the University of Glasgow in 1846 and remained there for the rest of his career. In 1847-49 he collaborated with Stokes on hydrodynamical studies, which Thomson applied to electrical and atomic theory. The absolute scale he proposed in 1848 was based on a theory of heat by Sadi Carnot. Thomson also observed (1852) what is now called the Joule-Thomson effect, namely that the decrease in temperature of a gas when it expands in a vacuum.
