    WILLIAM “JUDY" JOHNSON
    Position: Third Baseman, 1918-1937
    Height: 5' 11"
    Weight: 150 lbs.
    B/T: Right, Right
Born: 1899 in Snow Hill, MD

    Hall of Fame Induction: 1975
The ultimate clutch-hitter, Judy Johnson shamelessly indulged in game-winning hits and rally-killing catches. Johnson was a bashful, quiet performer with an astonishing ability to perform under pressure. He was respected for his intellectual approach to the game, excelling with grace and poise; providing a positive influence on teammates and opponents. Ted Page, a former outfielder for the Crawfords, bragged, "Judy Johnson was the smartest third baseman I ever came across. A scientific ball player, he did everything with grace and poise. You talk about playing third base? Heck, he was better than anybody I saw. And I saw Brooks Robinson, Mike Schmidt and even Pie Traynor. He had a powerful, accurate arm. He could do anything, come in for a ball, cut if off at the line, or range way over toward the shortstop hole. He was really something." In his first pro season of 1918, he played behind Bill Francis at third, hitting a modest .227. Johnson credits John Henry "Pop" Lloyd with his early development. "He's the man I gave the credit to for polishing my skills," Johnson recalled. "He taught me how to play third base and how to protect myself. John taught me more baseball than anyone else." The well-schooled disciple of "Pop" developed into a full-time star leading the Hilldales to their first Eastern Colored League pennant, in 1923, with a .391 average.

Johnson, attorney and politician, was born in Marion County, Alabama, on May 9, 1819, and moved with his family to Mississippi as a young man. He obtained his license to practice law in Mississippi in 1843 and about two years later moved to Texas, where he settled at Mount Pleasant in Titus County and established a law practice. On April 9, 1848, he married Amanda Melvira Mortimer Gray; they became the parents of three sons. Johnson also expanded his law practice to include a partnership with Byrd W. Gray, his new brother-in-law. In 1851 he was elected to the Fourth Texas Legislature as the representative from District Twenty. He served as a delegate from Titus County to the Texas Democratic convention in 1853 and on a local Democratic party committee in 1854. In 1856 he entered the race for district judge of the Eighth District as the candidate from the American (Know-Nothing) party, but he withdrew from the race before the election for unknown reasons. He moved to Paris Lamar County , about 1857, although he continued his law practice in Titus County as well. In 1861 he was elected a delegate from Lamar County to the

Australia's 1828 census is the main evidence linking William Johnson with Frances Johnson , the Lincolnshire convict who arrived in Sydney on the Lord Melville in 1817. William was born in Sydney about October 1818, father unknown, with half brothers and sisters left behind in Lincoln. Just as his mother's known activities conform with the general pattern of female convict life, so William's eventual status as a "gentleman" mirrored the popular view of the first generation Australians, the Currency Lads and Lasses. A CURRENCY LAD Until about 1820 most observers expected and feared that the rising generation of native-born Australians, mainly sprung from convict parents, would reproduce the stereotyped characteristics of most of their parents, perhaps in a heightened form. After that time nearly all chroniclers agreed, with mingled surprise and relief, that no such thing had occurred. Cunningham's characterisation of the 'Currency lads and lasses' exemplifies the general contemporary view. (2)
    • Our Colonial-born brethren are best known here by the name of Currency, in contradistinction to Sterling, or those born in the mother country. The name was originally given by a facetious paymaster of the seventy-third regiment quartered here, the pound currency being at that time inferior to the pound sterling. Our Currency lads and lasses are a fine interesting race, and do honour to the country whence they originated. The name is a sufficient passport to esteem with all the well-informed and right-feeling portion of our population.....

Summary Size: 6 linear feet (including 54 volumes). Geographic locations: Mississippi, Louisiana. Inclusive Dates: Bulk Dates: Languages: English, French, Spanish. Summary: Personal and business correspondence, legal and financial documents, diaries, daybooks, and other manuscript volumes pertaining to William T. Johnson (1809?-1851), a free black barber in Natchez, Mississippi, and to his wife, mother-in-law, and descendants. The diaries (1835-1851) kept by Johnson give details of contemporary life in Natchez. A collection of sheet music (1839-1909) belonging to the family is included. Citation: William T. Johnson and Family Memorial Papers, Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections, LSU Libraries, Baton Rouge.
Biographical and Historical Note In the late 1840's, Johnson became involved in a dispute with Baylor Winn and Benjamin Wade, regarding a property line on his plantation. In May, 1851, after the circuit court ordered a survey, the dispute was settled out of court. However, on June 16, 1851, Johnson was fatally wounded in an ambush, and before his death on the morning of June 17, he named Winn as his assassin. At the time of his death he owned more than 2,000 acres of land in Adams County. William T. Johnson's diaries were edited for publication by William Ransom Hogan and Edwin Adams Davis, and appeared under the title William Johnson's Natchez: The Ante-Bellum Diary of a Free Negro (LSU Press, 1951). This work provides additional information about the family.
