Christiaan Huygens (1629 - 1695) His father, Constantijn Huygens was secretary to the Prince of Orange, a respected poet and composer in his spare time, and his grandfather had been secretary to Prince William the Silent. His mother died when Huygens was 8 from the effects of the birth of his sister, Suzanne. An aunt supervised the household after that. When he was 16, Huygens went to Leiden to study law and mathematics. Two years later he went to college in Breda for a further two years. His studies concentrated not only on maths, but also on mechanics and optics. His first publication was on classical maths but the turning point came in Paris when he invented the pendulum clock (1656) and discovered Saturn's rings and its moon Titan. A year later he obtained the first solution for the problem of the dynamics of colliding elastic bodies. In 1659 he discovered the laws of centrifugal force and the relationship between period and length of the pendulum. Continuing his work on clocks, he took out a french patent for the longitude clock (during trials discovered that gravity is not constant over earth, but decreases as you go south). He was recognised as an important contributor to the world of science. He became a member of the Royal Society and was invited to organise the Academie des Sciences in Paris (founded 1666). Huygens lived in Paris during this time, payed by the King and living in spacious apartments in the Royal library. His work then included more fundamental questions in nature and he worked out a theory for the cause of gravity and a wave theory of light.

Christiaan Huygens Christiaan Huygens (born in The Hague on April 14, 1629) was a Dutch mathematician and physicist. He is the son of Constantijn Huygens. In 1655, he discovered Saturn's moon Titan. He also examined Saturn's planetary rings, and in 1656 he found out those rings consisted of rocks. In the same year he observed the Orion Nebula. Using his modern telescope he was able to divide the nebula into different stars. The brighter interior of the Orion Nebula is called the Huygens Region . He also discovered several interstellar nebulas and some double stars. After Blaise Pascal encouraged him to do so, Huygens wrote the first book on probability theory, which was published in 1657. He also worked on the construction of accurate clocks, suitable for naval navigation. In 1658 he published a book on this topic called Horologium . Huygens was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1663. In the year 1666 Huygens moved to Paris where he held a chair at the French Royal Society. Using the Parisian observatory, which was completed in 1672, he made further astronomical observations. He moved back to The Hague in 1681 after serious illness and died there 14 years later on July 8, 1695. Home Christiaan Huygens Christiaan Huygens was a brilliant Dutch mathematician, physicist, and astronomer who lived during the seventeenth century, a period sometimes referred to as the Scientific Revolution. Huygens, a highly gifted theoretical and experimental scientist, is best known for his work on the theories of centrifugal force, the wave theory of light, and the pendulum clock. At an early age, Huygens began work in advanced mathematics by attempting to disprove several theories established by the ancient Greeks in simple geometry. He was also very interested in astronomy and telescopes and spent a considerable amount of time devising methods to improve both the optical and mechanical performance of the telescope. His achievements in astronomy were reported in his 1659 book entitled Systema Saturnium , in which he noted his discovery of the rings encircling the planet Saturn as well as his observations about the moon, the planets, and the Orion nebula. Huygens' keen interest in astronomy probably led to his efforts in the measurement of time and other matters relating to mechanical physics. He was heavily involved in a seventeenth century controversy with Vincenzo Viviani as to the exact inventor of the pendulum clock, which he presented as an accomplishment of Dutch Science in his 1673 book

C h r i s t i a a n H u y g e n s Christiaan Huygens ou Huyghens - matemático, físico e astrônomo holandês nasceu em Haia - Holanda no dia 14 de abril de 1629. O segundo dos quatro filhos de Constantijn Huygens, homem de uma ampla e variada cultura e que exerceu, entre outras atividades, a diplomacia dedicando-se também às ciências e às letras. As primeiras lições que ele recebeu em sua casa foram por professores contratados para esse fim. Em 1637 enquanto continuava seus estudos de Matemática com o professor Frans Van Schooten, Huygens foi estudar na Universidade de Leyden onde em 1643 concluiu o curso de Direito. Logo em seguida, foi para Amsterdam onde concluiu o curso de Retórica. Em 1647, matriculou-se em Direito no Colégio de Nassau, em Breda e em 1649 ingressou para a Dinamarca onde fez parte de um grupo diplomático. Apresentou importante memória com respeito a quadratura das seções cônicas, em 1651, confirmando, assim, o prognóstico de Descartes , que fora amigo de seu pai e previra um futuro promissor para Huygens. Decorridos três anos, ele estabeleceu a teoria da evoluta e da evolvente das curvas planas. Inicialmente, trabalhou com o seu irmão Constantijn cuja finalidade seria aperfeiçoar o telescópio no sentido de torná-lo mais potente que os até então conhecidos e inventar uma nova técnica de polir lentes o que deu um resultado satisfatório, tanto que tornou as imagens mais nítidas.
