Christiaan Huygens : 1629 - 1693 Christiaan Huygens also spelled Christian Huyghens (b. April 14, 1629, The Hagued. July 8, 1695, The Hague), Dutch mathematician, astronomer, and physicist, who founded the wave theory of light, discovered the true shape of the rings of Saturn, and made original contributions to the science of dynamicsthe study of the action of forces on bodies. Huygens was from a wealthy and distinguished middle-class family. His father, Constantijn Huygens , a diplomat, Latinist, and poet, was the friend and correspondent of many outstanding intellectual figures of the day, including the scientist and philosopher From an early age, Huygens showed a marked mechanical bent and a talent for drawing and mathematics. Some of his early efforts in geometry impressed Descartes , who was an occasional visitor to the Huygens' household. In 1645 Huygens entered the University of Leiden, where he studied mathematics and law. Two years later he entered the College of Breda, in the midst of a furious controversy over the philosophy of Descartes. Although Huygens later rejected certain of the Cartesian tenets including the identification of extension and body, he always affirmed that mechanical explanations were essential in science, a fact that later was to have an important influence on his mathematical interpretation of both light and gravitation.

Huygens, Christiaan (16291695) Huygens was born in the Hague, Netherlands. He studied mathematics at the University of Leiden. His family was wealthy enough that Huygens was able to perform his mathematical research without additional support or a salary. He traveled around Europe eventually settling in Paris from 1666 to 1680. Huygens was a follower of Descartes He published his important geometrical results in Theoremata de quadratura hyperboles, ellipses et circuli and De circuli magnitudine inventa Later he considered the subject of probability and published Tractatus de ratiociniis in alea e ludo He tackled the problem that a pendulum clock whose bob swings in a circular arc has a frequency of swing dependent on the amplitude of the swing. The wider the swing, the longer it takes the bob to return to center. This does not happen if the bob can be made to swing in a cycloid. In 1673, Huygens, driven by a need to make accurate determinations of the longitude at sea, designed a pendulum clock whose bob swung in a cycloid. He hung the bob from a fine wire constrained by guards that caused it to draw up as it swung.

Huygens, Christiaan (1629-95)
Dutch physicist and astronomer who discovered Titan , in 1655, and determined that Saturn has rings. He also figured in one of the great unsung moments in planetary exploration when at 7 p.m. on November 28, 1659, he sketched a feature - a dark triangular patch - on the surface of Mars which he had just seen through his modest telescope. Eventually, it came to be known as Syrtis Major , the "Great Marsh", and for many years was presumed to be some kind of watery body. The significance of its sighting lay in the fact that, whereas the large bright and dark areas on the Moon had been visible for all to see from prehistoric times and Galileo had telescopically discovered the Great Red Spot on Jupiter (an atmospheric feature), Syrtis Major was the first permanent marking to be glimpsed on the surface of another planet. Huygens quickly used his discovery to demonstrate that the Martian day - the time it takes Mars to spin once around on its axis - is similar in length to our own.
He was deeply involved, too, in speculation about the existence of extraterrestrial life, a subject that dominates his

Huygens, Christiaan (L'Aia 1629-1695), astronomo, matematico e fisico olandese.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Huygens, Christiaan Dutch mathematical physicist and astronomer. He proposed the wave theory of light, developed the pendulum clock in 1657, discovered polarization, and observed Saturn's rings. He made important advances in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and mechanics, which he virtually founded. His work in astronomy was an impressive defence of the Copernican view of the Solar System. HASH(0xa2f22dc) Huygens also studied centrifugal force and showed, in 1659, its similarity to gravitational force, although he lacked the Newtonian concept of acceleration. He considered projectiles and gravity, developing the mathematically primitive ideas of Galileo . He found an accurate experimental value for the distance covered by a falling body in one second. In fact, his gravitational theories successfully deal with several difficult points that Newton carefully avoided. In the 1670s, Huygens studied motion in resisting media, becoming convinced by experiment that the resistance in such media as air is proportional to the square of the velocity.
