Saturn's Rings
This weekend, I spent an incredible evening on the front lawn of the famed Griffith Park Observatory. I recommend to each of you – run, don’t walk, to your nearest observatory and see the fun things to be seen! Currently, that includes a majority of the planets. In my opinion, the most startling view to be had with a small telescope is Saturn. I mean, looking at it with the naked eye, it’s big, bright, and sparkly. Impressive enough, sure, but when you put even a moderately powered telescope on that baby, wow! Rings, I tell you, Saturn has rings! It was easy for me to see the majestic rings encircling the planet, its patterned surface swirling below. How would like to have been Christiaan Huygens, the Dutch physicist and astronomer who discovered Saturn’s rings in 1655? What look of wonder must have crossed his face on seeing the ringed planet? Imagine this scene: It is night in Holland, 1655. Christiaan Huygens peers through a telescope, aimed at the brightly glowing glob of gas called Saturn. His wife, Mrs. Huygens, sticks her head out the window. MRS. HUYGENS: Christiaan, enough already!

From 1880 onwards till the very end of his life, Huxley was continuously occupied in a controversial campaign against orthodox beliefs. As Professor W. F. R. Weldon justly said of his earlier pokmics: “They were certainly among the principal agents in winning a larger measure of toleration for the critical examination of fundamental beliefs, and for the free expression of honest reverent doubt.” He threw Christianity overboard bodily and with little appreciation of its historic effect as a civilizing agency. He thought that “the exact nature of the teachings and the convictions of Jesus is extremely uncertain “ (Essays, v. 348). “What we are usually pleased to call religion nowadays is, for the most part, Hellenized Judaism “ (Essays, iv. 162). His final analysis of what since the second century, has assumed to itself the title of Orthodox Christianity” is a “varying compound of some of the best and some of the worst elements of Paganism and Judaism, moulded in practice by the innate character of certain people of the Western world “ (Essays, v. 142). He concludes “ That this Christianity is doomed to fall is, to my mind, beyond a doubt; but its fall will neither be sudden nor speedy” (Lc.). He did not omit, however, to do justice to “ the bright side of Christianity,” and was deeply impressed with the life of Catherine of Siena. Failing Christianity, he thought that some other “ hypostasis of men’s hopes” will arise (Essays, v. 254). His latest speculations on ethical problems are perhaps the least satisfactory of his writings. In 1892 he wrote:

Christiaan Huygens came from an important Dutch family. His father Constantin Huygens had studied natural philosophy and was a diplomat. It was through him that Christiaan was to gain access to the top scientific circles of the times. In particular Constantin had many contacts in England and corresponded regularly with Mersenne and was a friend of Descartes Tutored at home by private teachers until he was 16 years old, Christiaan learned geometry, how to make mechanical models and social skills such as playing the lute. His mathematical education was clearly influenced by Descartes who was an occasional visitor at the Huygens' home and took a great interest in the mathematical progress of the young Christiaan. Christiaan Huygens studied law and mathematics at the University of Leiden from 1645 until 1647. Van Schooten tutored him in mathematics while he was in Leiden. From 1647 until 1649 he continued to study law and mathematics but now at the College of Orange at Breda. Here he was fortunate to have another skilled teacher of mathematics, John

We might rise from this limited Earth and,
looking from above, thinking, whether nature all its
splendour and glory had wasted to this heaply of dirt.
So we will, like traveller in other far away lands,
get a better judgement about the things at home and
form judgement of any thing by its worthiness.
What the world calls great we will admire less and
all the nullities most of the people set their heart on
we despise noble, because we will know, that myriads of
settled and equally good fitted worlds like ours exist.

Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695), Scientist At April the 14th 1629 Christiaan Huygens was born in Den Haag . His Father was Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), a Dutch statesman, diplomat, and artist. At his home famous poets, painter, and philosopher of his time were guests, besides others Rubens, Rembrandt, and Descartes. Raised in this worldly-open family with many childrens Christiaan Huygens studied like Pierre de Fermat (1601-1665) jurisprudence first, then mathematics and natural sciences.

Dutch physicist who was the leading proponent of the wave theory of light In (1690), he developed the concept of the wavefront but could not explain color. The wave theory, however, was supported by the observation that two intersecting beams of light did not bounce off each other as would be expected if they were composed of particles. In contradiction to Newton , Huygens correctly believed that light must travel more slowly when it is refracted towards the normal, although this was not proven until experiments by Foucault in the nineteenth century. Huygens also made important contributions to mechanics, stating that in a collision between bodies, neither loses nor gains "motion" (his term for momentum ). He stated that the center of gravity moves uniformly in a straight line, and gave the expression for centrifugal force as
Additionally, he studied pendula He discovered Titan and was the first to correctly identify the observed elongation of Saturn as the presence of Saturn's rings. Huygens was also the mentor of
