Charles Darwin Explains the Diversity of Life
Charles Darwin was an unlikely candidate for scientific stardom. As a young man he was not considered very promising. His father once told him "you care for nothing but shooting, dogs and rat-catching, and you will be a disgrace to yourself and your family." He entered college planning to be a clergyman, but when he got a chance to go on a round-the-world cruise as a young unpaid natualist, he snapped up the opportunity. Darwin's five-year voyage on HMS Beagle led to a revolution in'the way we look at the natural world and to a new beginning for all of biology. Here is the way he cautiously, but accurately, summarized the voyage in the first sentence of one of the most famous works of science of all time, "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection." "When on board HMS Beagle as a naturalist, I was struck with certain facts in the distribution of the organic beings inhabiting South America, and in the geological relations of the present to the past inhabitants of that continent. These facts seemed to throw some light on the origin of species-that mystery of mysteries." These facts led Darwin to propose his theory of evolution by natural selection-the single niost important unifying theory in biology.

    The Voyage of the Beagle
Search all of The Voyage of the Beagle Charles Darwin's father at first refused to allow his 22-year-old son to go on this voyage around the world in 1831-1836: he felt it was not a wise career choice. Fortunately, his father relented, and we have Darwin's journal, which may be the greatest scientific travel narrative ever written. Revised by the author in 1860, this is an account of his experiences on the Beagle, which led to his formulation of the theory of evolution. He was able to observe coral reefs, fossil-filled rocks, earthquakes, and more, first-hand, and made his own deductions. Original (of course) and entertaining!

The real-life story of famed Jazz Age hostess Texas Guinan (Hutton) begins with young Texas struggling to make ends meet with her mother and father. Winning a rodeo championship, Texas begins a lucrative career, which leads to Broadway and national renown. Despite now being married, she gets involved with gangster Bill Kilgannon and ends up having to flee from him to Hollywood, where she embarks on a career in silent films. Later, during Prohibition, Texas returns to the East Coast where she becomes the famed "Queen of the Nightclubs." Fanciful history with plenty of period music and a colorful central character. But Hutton had conceived larger ideas than were entertained by the mineralogists of his day. He desired to trace back the origin of the various minerals and rocks, and thus to arrive at some clear understanding of the history of the earth. For many years he continued to study the subject. At last, in the spring of the year 1785, he communicated his views to the recently established Royal Society of Edinburgh in a paper entitled Theory of the Earth, or an Investigation of the Laws Observable in the Composition, Dissolution and Restoration of Land upon the Globe

Herman B Wells, legendary president and chancellor of Indiana University, spent a lifetime supporting the arts. Dedicated to bringing world culture to southern Indiana, Wells was also determined to make the arts central to the experience of the university community.
The IU Art Museum recently paid tribute to Wells with an exhibition entitled "Living with Art: The Legacy of Herman B Wells." Organized by Dr. Kathleen Foster, Class of 1949 Curator for Western Art after 1800, the exhibit contained art and furniture from Wells' 10th Street residence, the Indiana Memorial Union, and Woodburn House, Wells' home for many years.
