Hubble, Edwin Powell 1889-1953, American astronomer, b. Marshfield, Mo. He did research (1914-17) at Yerkes Observatory, and joined (1919) the staff of Mt. Wilson Observatory, Pasadena, Calif., of which he became director. Building on V. M. Slipher 's discovery that galaxies had strong shifts to the red end of their spectra, Hubble used the Cepheids in nearby galaxies to demonstrate that they lie far beyond the Milky Way. Because of an incorrect understanding of the Cepheids, this distance was vastly increased years later. He also suggested that the clusters of galaxies are distributed almost uniformly in all directions, although more recent studies show that clusters are combined into huge superclusters of galaxies: at this new level, however, the distribution appears to be even. He was the first to offer observational evidence to support the theory of the expanding universe, presenting his findings in what is now known as Hubble's law . With Milton Humason, Hubble classified the different types of galaxies including irregular galaxies, three types of spirals and barred spirals, and elliptical galaxies. Included in his writings are

Edwin Powell Hubble, Gründer der extragalaktischen Astronomie
Hubble wurde am 20. November 1989 in Marshfield, Missouri (USA) geboren.

One of the most important figures in modern cosmology is the American astronomer Edwin Hubble. He discovered a universe of galaxies outside the Milky Way and showed that the entire universe is expanding. Hubble continued to find galaxies at greater and greater distances He developed the system for classifying galaxies by their structure, which is still used today.

    Edwin Hubble
Edwin Powell Hubble is renowned for determining that there are other galaxies in the Universe beyond the Milky Way, and for observing that the universe is expanding at a constant rate. Hubble was a tall, elegant, athletic, man who at age 30 had an undergraduate degree in astronomy and mathematics, a legal degree as a Rhodes scholar, followed by a PhD in astronomy. He was an attorney in Kentucky (joined its bar in 1913), and had served in WWI, rising to the rank of major. He was bored with law and decided to go back to his studies in astronomy. In 1919 he began to work at Mt. Wilson Observatory in California, where he would work for the rest of his life. He was researching nebulae, fuzzy patches of light in the sky. In 1924, he announced the discovery of a Cepheid, or variable star, in the Andromeda Nebulae. Since the work of Henrietta Leavitt
had made it possible to calculate the distance to Cepheids, he calculated that this Cepheid was much further away than anyone had thought and that therefore the nebulae was not a gaseous cloud inside our galaxy, like so many nebulae, but in fact, a galaxy of stars just like the Milky Way, only much further away. Until now, people believed that the only thing existing ouside the Milky Way were the Magellanic Clouds. The Universe was much bigger than had been previously presumed. Hubble wanted to classify the galaxies according to their content, distance, shape, and brightness patterns, and in his observations he made another momentous discovery. By observing redshifts in the light wavelengths emitted by the galaxies, he saw that galaxies were moving away from each other at a rate constant to the distance between them (Hubble's Law). The further away they were, the faster they receded. This led to the calculation of the point where the expansion began, and confirmation of the big bang theory. Hubble calculated it to be about 2 billion years ago, but more recent estimates have revised that to 20 billion years ago.

Hubble, Edwin Powell US astronomer who discovered the existence of other galaxies outside our own, and classified them according to their shape. His theory that the universe is expanding is now generally accepted.
Hubble discovered Cepheid variable stars in the Andromeda galaxy 1923, proving it to lie far beyond our own Galaxy. In 1925 he introduced the classification of galaxies as spirals, barred spirals, and ellipticals. In 1929 he announced Hubble's law, which states that the galaxies are moving apart at a rate that increases with their distance.
Hubble was born in Marshfield, Missouri, and studied at Chicago and in the UK at Oxford. He briefly practised law before returning to Chicago to join Yerkes Observatory 1914. From 1919 he worked at Mount Wilson, near Pasadena, California.
His data on the speed at which galaxies were receding (based on their red shifts) were used to determine the portion of the universe that we can ever come to know, the radius of which is called the Hubble radius. Beyond this limit, any matter will be travelling at the speed of light, so communication with it will never be possible. The ratio of the velocity of galactic recession to distance has been named the Hubble constant.

Hubble Expands the Universe of exploring the stars was greater than his attraction to law. So he abandoned law for astronomy. I "chucked the law for astronomy and I knew that, even if I were second rate or third rate, it was astronomy that mattered," Hubble said. He studied astronomy at the University of Chicago and completed his doctoral thesis in 1917. After serving in World War I, he began working at the Mount Wilson Observatory in Pasadena, Calif., studying the faint patches of luminous "fog" or nebulae - the Greek word for cloud - in the night sky. Using the 100-inch reflecting Hooker Telescope - the largest telescope of its day - Hubble peered farther into space to study the Andromeda nebula. With this powerful telescope, he discovered stars on the outskirts of Andromeda, proving that galaxies - a collection of stars and planets - existed beyond our Milky Way. Hubble also devised the classification system for galaxies, grouping them by sizes and shapes, that astronomers still use today. He also obtained extensive evidence that the laws of physics outside our galaxy are the same as on Earth, "verifying the principle of the uniformity of nature," he said. Albert Einstein could have foretold Hubble’s discovery in 1917 when he applied his newly developed General Theory of Relativity to the universe. His theory - that space is curved by gravity - predicted that the universe could not be static but had to expand or contract. Einstein found this prediction so unbelievable that he modified his original theory to avoid the problem. Upon learning of Hubble’s discoveries, Einstein said that changing the theory was "the biggest blunder of my life."

E d w i n H u b b l e Edwin Hubble was a man who changed our view of the Universe. In 1929 he showed that galaxies are moving away from us with a speed proportional to their distance. The explanation is simple, but revolutionary: the Universe is expanding. Hubble was born in Missouri in 1889. His family moved to Chicago in 1898, where at High School he was a promising, though not exceptional, pupil. He was more remarkable for his athletic ability, breaking the Illinois State high jump record. At university too he was an accomplished sportsman playing for the University of Chicago basketball team. He won a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford where he studied law. It was only some time after he returned to the US that he decided his future lay in astronomy. In the early 1920's Hubble played a key role in establishing just what galaxies are. It was known that some spiral nebulae (fuz
