    International applications differ

The application process can be complicated. Claudette Fortier, coordinator of the International Students Office, deals with the myriad questions from newly admitted and regular international students on a day-to-day basis. She says the questions start long before the students arrive in Canada.
As a result, admissions counsellors are faced with a heavy workload, and both Hirst and Thomas admit it is a challenge. In 2000, Concordia received 3,008 international applications. In 2001, this jumped to 4,500 applications.

Excavating the News: DNA and the sins of Thomas Jefferson Whenever oral tradition and science collide, there are always sparks; as Barbara Mertz has said, "Tradition is a tricky wench." Rumors that Thomas Jefferson had fathered children by his slave Sally Hemings have been rampant in the press and among historians since Jefferson's day. A year ago, DNA testing of some of Sally Hemings' descendants indicated that these rumors are very likely true; genetic matches have been made between Thomas Jefferson and his recorded descendants, and the descendants of Sally Hemings. The reactions of the Monticello Association (a group of people claiming Jefferson ancestry) has been fear and loathing. I suspect that, contrary to the media reports, these reactions are only partly racist, but may stem more from the Jefferson descendants attempting to deal with Jeffersonian feet of clay. If these genetic tests are correct, Jefferson had a 40 year affair with someone he owned and never freed; the ultimate sexual harassment case. A recent article at ABC news gives the worst possible cast to the problem; as does this article from MSBET. A
