"John Frederick William Herschel, Bart., K.H. was born at Slough, near Windsor, on the 7th March, 1792 and died at Collingwood, Kent on the 11th May, 1871, in his eightieth year. He was the only child of Sir Frederick William Herschel and, like his father, was one of the greatest astronomers of all ages." "In 1820, assisted by his father, [John Herschel] completed a mirror of 18 inches diameter and 20 feet focal length [f/13] which became the heart of the telescope with which much of his later observing was done." "...there was an air of dilettantism about Herschel. His mind ranged over a vast number of subjects ... but when it came to physical hard work his enthusiasm would often flag ... Professor Pritchard in his biographical notice in the Encyclopaedia Britannica wrote 'Herschel had become an astronomer from a sense of duty, just as his father had become one by fascination and fixed resolve: hence it was by filial loyalty to his father's memory that he was now impelled to undertake the completion of that work which at Slough had been so grandly commended. William Herschel had explored the northern heavens; John Herschel determined to explore the heavens of the south, as well as re-explore the north.' "

    John Frederick William Herschel
John Herschel was born in Slough, England on March 7, 1792, the only child of renowned scientist and astronomer William Herschel. He received an excellent education, and while studying for his undergraduate degree in mathematics, instituted the Analytical Society of Cambridge in conjunction with George Peacock and Charles Babbage. The group introduced Leibniz notation into English mathematics to supplant the unwieldy Newtonian symbols. When Herschel graduated from Cambridge in 1813, he was at the top of his class. Herschel began to study in London for a career in law in 1814, but changed his mind within a year. He then returned to Cambridge for a brief stint as a teacher of mathematics, but left in 1816 to assist in the astronomical research of his aging father. The years they spent working together served as the groundwork from which the younger Herschel would build the rest of his career. In 1820, Herschel was one of the founding members of the Royal Astronomical Society and when his father died in 1822 he carried on his work, making a detailed study of double stars. In collaboration with James South he compiled a catalog of observations that was published in 1824. The work garnered the pair the Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society and the Lalande Prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences. Herschel was also knighted 1831. In 1833, Herschel decided to temporarily relocate with his family to Cape Colony, South Africa in order to observe the skies not visible in England. Herschel's research was carried out at a brisk rate, and by the time they ventured home four years later, he had amassed an amazing amount of data. He had made catalogs of nebulae and double stars, had described the Magellanic clouds, which are only visible in the southern hemisphere, and had made a study of the intensity of solar radiation using an actinometer, a device he invented in 1825.

Sir John Herschel (1792-1871) has long been recognized as one of Britain's great nineteenth-century scientists. His accomplishments in astronomy, mathematics and physics are well known, but this publication focuses on his private interest in botanical matters.
A visit to the Cape of Good Hope from 1834 to 1838 to survey the southern skies exposed Hershel to another great natural wonder - the beauty and diversity of the Cape Flora. The profound impact this encounter had on both John and his wife Margaret resulted in a magnificent portfolio of botanical drawings, outlined by John using a camera lucida for scientific accuracy, and painted I watercolours by Margaret. Herschel's restless, analytical mind also led him to consider deeper issues, among them the morphology of bulbs, the diversity of species, and botanical scents and perfumes.
The Brenthurst Press has once again drawn on the resources of the Brenthurst Library, the private Africana collection of Mr. H.F. Oppenheimer, and other relevant material (much of it unpublished and in private collections) to produce Flora Herscheliana: Sir John and Lady Herschel at the Cape 1834 to 1838, by Brian Warner and John Rourke. The book includes unpublished works by other artists such as Charles Davidson Bell and Thomas Bowler, and is a celebration of the Herschels' fascination with the abundant beauty they discovered on the doorstep of Feldhausen, their home at the Cape.

    Administrative/Biographical History
Herschel's astronomer son Sir John Frederick William Herschel was born in Slough on 7 March 1792. He was educated privately and at Eton and at home before entering St. John's College, Cambridge. He graduated in 1813 and then proceeded with his studies, graduating with the degree of MA in 1816. During this period, Herschel, George Peacock (1791-1858) and Charles Babbage (1792-1871) restored mathematical science to a place of importance in England through their transactions of the Analytical Society of Cambridge , a translation of Elementary treatise on the differential calculus

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity John Frederick William Herschel ( ) was a notable astronomer, as well as an accomplished chemist and contributor to the science of optics and photography. Born into a family of astronomers - his father was Friedrich Wilhelm (William) Herschel ( , who discovered Uranus, Herschel was educated in a number of public schools, at home by a Scottish mathematician and subsequently at St John's College, Cambridge, which he graduated from with a BA in . He was a founder member of the Astronomical Society (later the Royal Astronomical Society). At university, Herschel was close friends with Charles Babbage ( ) and George Peacock ( Herschel was a methodical recorder of information. He created detailed records of the skies he studied and made objective comparisons of the brightness of stars. An example of this was the nova of the star Eta Carinae that he observed while in South Africa, his home for nearly five years. In his time at Cape Town, he made a large catalogue of the objects he observed, many of which he was the first to identify, thanks to his powerful telescope. On his return to England, he was awarded a Baronetcy. After this period in Africa, he continued his work in astronomy and experimented with optics (his father had been a manufacturer of telescopes) and photography. His work in optics produced a detailed paper on the theory of spherical aberration in lenses, a subject he, as an astronomer, must have had extensive experience of. In the realm of photography, Herschel experimented (with only limited success) with colour reproduction. He was the first to produce a photograph on a glass plate, and coined the terms "positive" and "negative".

By the time he was selected to become an astronaut in April 1959, John Glenn had been flying fighter planes for the Marine Corps for nearly twenty years. He flew missions during World War II in the Pacific around 1944 and over Korea in the Korean War in 1953. Between the two wars he was part of Marine Fighter Squadron 218 on the North China patrol while being based in Guam. After the Korean War he was involved in flight training programs teaching young pilots, as well as being involved in designing new fighter planes with the Fighter Design Branch of the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics. During 1957, he set a record for flying across the United States (from Los Angeles to New York) in just 3 hours and 23 minutes. This was the first time anyone had flown across the country with an average speed that was faster than the speed of sound. Altogether, John Glenn has more than 9,000 hours of flying time under his belt (that's more than an entire year of continuous flying!).

In 1846, Thomas De Quincey published a review article, "System of the Heavens as Revealed by Lord Rosse's Telescopes," that was based on his friend J.P. Nichol's most recent work of popular astronomy. Dominating the article is a discussion of the spatial implications of Rosse's discoveries, and dominating that discussion is De Quincey's reaction to an engraving of the Great Nebula in Orion found in Nichol's book. De Quincey sees in the form of the nebula a hideous and malignant face that he compares both to an Assyrian sultan's and to those of Satan and Death in Paradise Lost . In this "phantom in Orion" De Quincey sees "a head thrown back, and raising its face . . . in the very anguish of hatred to some unknown heavens." "Brutalities unspeakable sit upon the upper lip"; "cruelty and revenge" on the lower. The head is broken by "a horrid chasm, a ravine, a shaft, that many centuries would not traverse." It is a vision "ready for the worship of those that are tormented in sleep." The temptation to read De Quincey's response to the Great Nebula and Rosse's discoveries back into De Quincey's own life and writings, into the phantasmagoria of opium dreams, confrontations with death, and the demonization of the Orient, is irresistible. Hillis Miller, Robert Snyder, and, most recently, John Barrell have all done so to good effect. But such an approach ignores or minimizes the importance of the Great Nebula not only to early Victorian science but to early Victorian

    Introduction
The year was 1843, and the theme of English meteorology was measurement. Sir 'Thunder-and-Lightning' William Snow Harris was given his last British Association grant to complete the Plymouth series of over 120 000 thermometric observations, publication of which proved a costly venture, not least because the series implied no meteorological theory whatsoever.
Birt had already acted as Herschel's computing assistant in the arrangement and reduction of many series of barometric measurements and was enthusiastic to accept the offer. The British Association eventually entrusted him to investigate the properties of atmospheric waves, but in doing so, however, it unwittingly prepared the ground for the failure of what Joseph Agassi once called Herschel's 'philosophy of success.'
