Abstract: Infinite systems of linear equations are usually solved by the method of finite sections. This means that the infinite system is replaced by the sequence of finite sections of the original system and it is expected that the solutions of the finite systems converge to the solution of the infinite system. This method has a rich history of 150 years and many distinguished mathematicians have made important contributions in this area. The talk will present the early history and recent important achievements. Unexpected examples and computational experiments will motivate and illustrate the main results. Special attention will be paid to the case of Toeplitz matrices with continuous and discontinuous symbols. The talk is planned for a wide audience. Israel Gohberg was born in 1928 and his famous collaborations with M.G.Krein began in 1950. His first degrees were from the University of Kishinev, and he obtained a Ph.D from the University of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1954 and in 1964 completed his habilitation at Moscow State University. In the same year he founded the Department of Functional Analysis of the Moldavian Academy of Science. He emigrated to Israel in 1974 and, since 1981, has held the Nathan and Lily Silver Chair at Tel Aviv University. Gohberg's work has strongly influenced the development of analysis in the 20th century. He has made outstanding contributions in integral equations, operator theory, matrix analysis and linear algebra and, more recently, in computational techniques for integral equations and structured matrices.
