(B.19) Sir Charles Fox (1810 - 1874) - notes see LINKS below Sir Charles Fox was born in The Wardwick, Derby (England) to a leading physician and surgeon in that town. Around 1840 he formed the firm of Fox, Henderson and Co. primarily concerned with railway construction, but which went on to build the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Although the original idea for the building came from Joseph Paxton, such an innovative and radical design could not be built without the partnership of an innovative engineering company prepared to take on the undoubted challenge it was. Francis Fox (his son, see links below) wrote: "My father had great confidence in cast iron if properly designed, and he became known as the "Cast-iron Man". No one but he was able to design the building as regards its details, and therefore upon him, personally, devolved the duty of drawing everything, even to the most minute particulars." Sir Charles practiced as both a civil and mechanical engineer - the distinction between various branches of engineering then was not as clear cut as it is today. His membership to the Institution of Civil Engineers was proposed by Geo. Lowe

, who was one of his closest friends, wrote of him. "He seems to have the particular talent of knowing more about what he is saying and with less pains than anyone else. His converstaion is like a brilliant player at billiards, the strokes follow one another piff puff...." The Duchess met him in 1777 when Fox was 28 years old but he already had an enormous reputation and had led a very full life. He had been in parliament from the age of 19, at 21 he was first lord of the Admiralty. He could speak 5 languages fluently was renowned as the best orator of his day and had frittered away a fortune of a quarter of million pounds (a good income for a lord's son at this time was around five thousand pounds). He received an eclectic upbringing for while he had only the best in education his father also believed that 'nothing should be done to break his spirit' so he was fully indulged. While still a child he had been promised that he might watch a wall being demolished on the family estate. However, when his rather found out that it had been demolished with Charles being there to see this happen, he insisted that the wall be rebuilt and demolished again so Charles might have the promised treat.

    Charles James Fox
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Charles James Fox January 24 September 13 ) was an English politician. He was the third son of Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland , one of the older generation self-aggrandizing Whigs . His mother was Lady Caroline Lennox , daughter of the Duke of Richmond. Fox was educated at Eton and Hertford College, Oxford . He was over indulged by his father and quickly entered into an extravagant and dissolute lifestyle, in 1774 he was £140,000 in debt. Fox became MP for Midhurst in 1768, although he was legally too young. He supported Grafton and his attacks on the radical John Wilkes . Fox was made a junior lord of the Admiralty by North in 1770, he resigned in January 1772 in order to vote against the

B.16) Sir Charles Fox - memoir
Memoirs - Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Volume XXXIX, 1874/1875 Part I (page 264-266). From the year 1857, Sir Charles practised in London as a Civil and Consulting Engineer, in partnership with his two elder sons, Mr. Charles Douglas Fox and Mr. Francis Fox, MM. Inst. C.E. During this time he was Engineer to the comprehensive scheme of high-level lines at Battersea for the London and Brighton, the London, Chatham and Dover, and the London and South-Western railways, with the approach to the Victoria station, and the widening of the Victoria railway bridge over the Thames; to the Queensland, Cape of Good Hope, and Canadian (narrow gauge) railways; and, in conjunction with Mr. George Berkley, M. Inst. C.E., to the Indian tramway, the first narrow-gauge railway in India. In the course of his professional duties Sir Charles met with a severe accident, which seriously impaired his health, and to this may, in a great measure, be traced his decease, which occurred at Blackheath on the 14th of June, 1874, at the age of sixty-four. Sir Charles was elected a Member of the Institution on the 13th of January, 1838, having been proposed by Mr. George Lowe, and seconded by Mr. Robert Stephenson and Mr. Joshua Field. He was also a Member of various scientific societies. Until within the last few years, he was a frequent attendant at the meetings of the Institution, where his acknowledged professional standing, combined with a genial presence and the almost courtly deference with which he enunciated his opinions, always secured him an attentive hearing. Of his private life it will suffice to say that it was such as to claim the love and respect of all who knew him, whilst he performed all his duties as a man and a citizen with the most praiseworthy exactitude. It may indeed be said of him that rarely has there been a more generous man or a more tender and affectionate parent.

    FOX, CHARLES JAMES
In 1865 he was elected president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the youngest president who had ever sat in the chair. He was strongly opposed to the project of a Channel tunnel to France, and in 1872 he endeavoured to ‘obtain the consent of parliament to a Channel ferry scheme, whereby trains were to be (ransported across the strait in large ferry steamers. The proposal involved the making of enlarged harbours at Dover and Audresselles on the French coast, and the bill, after passing the Commons, was thrown out by the casting vote of the chairman of a committee of the House of Lords. In 1875 he was enabled to render, in his private capacity, a signal service to the Italian government, which was much embarrassed by impracticable proposals pressed on it by Garibaldi for a rectification of the course of the Tiber and other engineering works. He had several interviews with the Italian patriot, and persuaded him of the impracticable nature of his plan, thereby obtaining for the government leisure to devise a more reasonable scheme. For eight years from 1871 he acted as general engineering adviser in Egypt to the Khedive Ismail. He projected a railway to the Sudan, and also the reparation of the barrage. These and many other plans came to an end owing to financial reasons. But the maps and surveys for the railway were given to the war office, and proved most useful to Lord Wolseley in his Nile expedition. For his service Fowler was made K.C.M.G. (1885). He was created a baronet in 1890 on the completion of the Forth bridge, of which with his partner Sir Benjamin Baker he was joint engineer. He died at Bournemouth on the 20th of November
