The Idea of Europe
FROM CHRISTENDOM TO EUROPE
  • As early as 1471, the astronomer Johannes Müller (Regiomontanus) praised Nuremberg as "the middle point of Europe." In the seventeenth century, Francis Bacon referred to "we Europeans." His England was involved in the "affairs of Europe."

  • See Map of the World (1534-1536) by Oronce Fine (1494-1555). In Creating French Culture: The Path to Royal Absolutism , we read: "Oronce Fine was one of the rare French geographers in the Renaissance to prepare maps of the world. This map is bordered with a handsome Renaissance decoration: two columns support a pediment bearing a Latin inscription signifying 'A new and complete description of the world,' interrupted in the middle by a coat of arms of France. Also to be noted is a vast southern land mass ( Terra Australis ), recently discovered but not yet explored" (http://lcweb.loc.gov/exhibits/bnf/bnf0004.html).

Ünnepnapok. Különbözõ kultúrák, korok a naptár más-más napjait jelölik ki ünnepnapoknak. Akadhatnak azonban meglepõ egybeesések. Platón állítólag november 7-én született, legalábbis a firenzei Academia Platonicá ban az akadémikusok, többek között Marsiglio Ficino, Poliziano és Pico della Mirandola is ezen a napon ünnepelték a görög születésének évfordulóit. A Nagy Októberi Szocialista Forradalom (NOSZF) óta különös ellentmondás napja lett hát a novemberi hetedik. 1917-tõl fogva minden idealista félistenként tisztelt örökös mestere épp a történelmi materializmus igéjét hirdetõk szent forradalmának ünnepén születetik újjá évrõl-évre az ünnepek megmásíthatatlan szentségének megfelelõen. as the praises of Francois Clouet were sung by the writers of thc day, his name was carefully preserved from reign to reign, and there is an ancient and unbroken tradition in the attribution of many of his pictures. There are not, however, any original attestations of his works, nor are any documents known which would gtiarantee the ascriptions usually accepted. To him arc attributed the portraits of Francis I. at the Uffizi and at the Louvre, and various drawings relating to them. He probably also painted the portrait of Catherine de’ Medici at Versailles and other works, and in all probability a large number of the drawings ascribed to him were from his hand. One of his most remarkable portraits is that of Mary, queen of Scots, a drawing in chalks in the Bibliothèque Nationale, and of similar character are the two portraits of Charles IX. and the one at Chantilly of Marguerite of France. Perhaps his masterpiece is the portrait of Elizabeth of Austria in the Louvre. He resided in Paris in the rue de Ste Avoye in the Temple quarter, close to the Hotel de Guise, and in 1568 is known to have been under the patronage of Claude Gouffier de Boisy, Seigneur d’Oiron, and his wife Claude de Baune. Another ascertained fact concerning Francois Clouet is that in 1571 he was “ summoned to the office of the Court of the Mint,” and his opinion was taken on the likeness to the king of a portrait struck by the mint. He prepared the death-mask of Henry II., as in 1547 he had taken a similar mask of the face and hands of Francis I., in order that the effigy to be used at the funeral might be prepared from his drawings; and on each of these occasions he executed the painting to be used in the decorations of the church and the banners for the great ceremony.

A Digression that Simply Got Out of Hand
Note: Part 5 was originally posted to a discussion list as "Early Maps," and then reprinted in Aeon V:3 (1999) under the present title. In the last two sentences to the introduction to that version, I wrote: "I haven't spelled it out, because I haven't the time to do the theme justice, but this inquiry isn't merely about cartography. It hasn't escaped me that projection is more than an exercise in geometry, or that one's mental map of the world is a map of the self or its mirror image." Ginenthal tells us that he got the idea in the first place from reading about early maps. "Ever since publishing Carl Sagan and Immanuel Velikovsky...in...1990...I have stated my belief that the icecaps of Greenland and Antarctica were created recently a belief based on information from ancient maps and the discoveries made by Arlington Mallery and Charles H. Hapgood." According to these authors, ancient maps accurately depict Greenland and Antarctica in an ice-free state. However, the maps in existence are neither ancient nor accurate. Rather, Mallery and Hapgood claim that they were compiled from accurate source maps drawn thousands of years ago. In order to support this claim, they have to make a number of assumptions which, taken together, are remotely improbable, quite aside from what we know today about paleoclimatology.

Mapeamento do Cosmos

Map Fair Introduction Contents Chapter 15 Chapter 14 FRANCE In the turbulent times at the beginning of the sixteenth century a new king came to the throne of France, Francis I, young, ambitious and opposed at every turn to Charles V's designs to impose his will on Europe and the New World. Unable to obstruct Charles in Europe, Francis turned his attention to the New World and, in 1523, dispatched a Florentine seaman, Giovanni da Verrazano, to attempt to find a North West passage, followed a few years later by Jacques Cartier, who completed three voyages to the St Lawrence (1534-41) and staked France's claim to the lands bordering the great river. These discoveries were recorded on world maps made about 1544 by Pierre Desceliers, one of the leading figures of the Dieppe School of Cartographers which flourished in the years 1530-60. Following the death of Francis I, France was plagued for half a century by religious wars of succession and a series of weak and unstable governments. Indeed, towards the end of the century Paris was in the hands of a revolutionary council and not until the Edict of Nantes in 1598 was any degree of stability achieved. In consequence, the orderly development of cartography which took place in Germany and England bypassed France until well into the next century . That is not to say, of course, that map production was entirely neglected. Apart from the work of the Dieppe map and chart makers, there were world maps by Oronce Fine and Andre Thevet which were copied by many cartographers and, some years before the issue of Waghenaer's sea charts, Nicolas de Nicolay, a widely travelled Frenchman, prepared navigational charts of many lands including one of the best maps to date of Scotland (1583).
