The Navier-Stokes equations and turbulent flows. Do solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations develop a singularity in finite time? Since Leray suggested these singular solutions may signify the onset of turbulence in a real fluid flow, it is also an interesting engineering issue. This remains an important open problem and is currently one of the millenium prize problems set by the Clay Institute and worth a million dollars (see the criteria devised by Charles Fefferman Geophysical fluid dynamics and low Rossby number asymptotics. Mision Imposible Ecuaciones Navier-Stokes

GRADUATE STUDIES IN MATHEMATICS Tulane University Department of Mathematics New Orleans, Louisiana 70118 (504) 865-5727 MATHEMATICS, COMPUTATION, AND STATISTICS AT TULANE Tulane is a privately endowed university located near Audubon Park in New Orleans. At present it has an enrollment of about 10,000 students from almost every state and from 60 foreign countries. Tulane's mathematical tradition can be traced back to the late nineteenth century, when Florian Cajori, later an expert in the history of mathematical notation, and the most famous translator of Isaac Newton's Principia , was the recipient of the first doctorate in mathematics from Tulane University (1894). In those days, however, and until the end of World War II, Tulane's main strength in mathematics was in its undergraduate program. Four undergraduates from that period (as well as Cajori) later became presidents of the Mathematical Association of America (Duren, McShane, Moise, Young); one (McShane) was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. The department was revitalized after World War II and now has a faculty of 24. In addition to regular faculty, the department maintains two postdoctoral positions and benefits from frequent visits by researchers in many areas of mathematics. From 1970 to 1997, 104 Ph.D.'s were awarded.

Gregori Aleksandrovitch MARGULIS born February 24, Moscow
Moscow University Provided innovative analysis of the structure of Lie groups. His work belongs to combinatorics, differential geometry, ergodic theory, dynamical systems, and Lie groups.
Daniel G. QUILLEN born June 22, 1940, Orange, New Jersey
Massachusetts Institute of Technology The prime architect of the higher algebraic K -theory, a new tool that successfully employed geometric and topological methods and ideas to formulate and solve major problems in algebra, particularly ring theory and module theory.
