At the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto, a resolution was adopted that at each ICM, two gold medals should be awarded to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Professor J. C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals which were named in his honor. Consistent with Fields's wish that the awards recognize both existing work and the promise of future achievement, it was agreed to restrict the medals to mathematicians not over forty at the year of the Congress. In 1966 it was agreed that, in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress. Ein paar Worte zur Einleitung Der Stadtschulrat für Wien und das Bundesministerium für Unterricht und kulturelle Angelegenheiten haben das 1000-jährige Jubiläum Österreichs zum Anlaß genommen, Kindern und Erwachsenen, Österreichern und Freunden von Österreich diese Aufgaben zu präsentieren. Problemorganisatoren aller Altersstufen, Schüler und Studenten aller Studienrichtungen und Ideenausflügler sind eingeladen an unseren Denk-Spielplätzen zu probieren, zu tüfteln, zu knacken, .... Kreativität ist beim Lösen der Aufgaben gefragt und als Schlußbemerkung sei die Behauptung von Roger Penrose erwähnt, der meint, daß das menschliche Denken seinem Wesen nach nicht-algorithmisch ist. Aura tajemniczo¶ci i niezwyk³o¶ci wokó³ niego pojawi³a siê jeszcze w XIX wieku, gdy matematycy zaczêli systematyczniej badaæ obiekty wielowymiarowe. Zainteresowanie czwartym wymiarem osi±gnê³o apogeum, gdy okaza³o siê, ¿e w fizycznych teoriach istotn± rolê odgrywa czasoprzestrzeñ - przestrzeñ czterowymiarowa. Czysta abstrakcja mia³a szansê uzyskaæ bardziej realne kszta³ty. Przy okazji niektórzy dostrzegli szansê na pseudonaukowe wyja¶nienie zjawisk paranormalnych - umieszczenie duchów w czwartym wymiarze mog³oby wyt³umaczyæ wiele niezwyk³ych zjawisk i uwiarygodniæ ca³± teoriê. Pó¼niej, gdy w matematyce zaczê³y siê pojawiaæ coraz bardziej abstrakcyjne konstrukcje, czwartym wymiarem interesowano siê jakby mniej, modne sta³y siê inne pojêcia i teorie.
