MATEMÁTICOS DE NUESTRO TIEMPO
La matemática actual tiene abiertos fecundos campos de un gran interés. Los grandes matemáticos de la segunda mitad del siglo XX y hasta nuestros días intentan el desarrollo de una matemática acorde con el tiempo en que vivimos, capaz de afrontar el reto que representa la tendencia social tanto como el progreso de las necesidades computacionales de las nuevas ingenierías o el avance vertiginoso de algunas disciplinas como la Astrofísica y la Computación Teórica. Mostramos aqui algunas referencias a su trabajo, utilizando diversas fuentes de datos, entre las que podemos destacar, por su excelente documentación, la base de datos de la Universidad de St. Andrews, Escocia. Es una somera indicación del quehacer en la disciplina de matemáticos de extraordinaria calidad, algunos de ellos prematuramente fallecidos, que nacieron ya en los primeros años de la década de los 50, en plena postguerra y comienzo de la llamada Guerra Fría.

"Medalha Fields" Esclarecimentos
Carta It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee. As things are at present a practical course of procedure would seem to be for the Executive Committee of a Congress to appoint a small international committee authorized to add to its number and call into consultation other mathematicians as it might deem expedient. The Committee would be expected to decide on the ones to whom the awards should be made thirty months in advance of the following Congress. Its decisions would be communicated to the President and Secretary of the Organizing Committee of the Congress, this Committee having the duty of communicating to the Prime Minister of Canada the names of the recipients in order that the medal might be prepared in time and forwarded to the president of the Organizing Committee. Immediately on the appointment of the Executive Committee of the Congress the medals would be handed over to its President. The presentation of the medals would constitute a special feature at some general meeting of the Congress.

The Tetra Surface is a compact surface with constant mean curvature (K. Große-Brauckmann and K. Polthier, 1997), and has the symmetry of a regular tetrahedron. A Fields-éremrõl
Bevezetés A négyévente megrendezésre kerülõ Nemzetközi Matematikai Kongresszus legutóbbi ülését az elmúlt nyáron tartották Pekingben. A kongresszus keretében immár tizenötödik alkalommal került sor a matematikai tudomány legnagyobb szakmai elismeréseinek, a Fields-érmeknek az átadására. Ebbõl az alkalomból érdemes röviden áttekintenünk a díj történetét és céljait, ízelítõül néhány olyan kiemelkedõ tudós munkáját is bemutatva, akit a magas kitüntetéssel jutalmaztak. A korhatár azonban könyörtelen is: sok kiváló matematikus azért maradt le a Fields-éremrõl, mert 40 éves kora után jutott el pályája csúcsára. A leghíresebb ilyen eset Andrew Wilesé, aki a Fermat-sejtést 41 éves korában bizonyította be; hosszas vita után végül ezért a szenzációs eredményéért a Kongresszus 1998-ban személyre szóló különdíjjal jutalmazta. Ugyancsak ,,fájdalomdíjul'' szolgálhatnak a Fields-éremrõl lemaradt tudósok számára a különféle életmûdíjak. Ezek leghíresebbike az izraeli Wolf-díj, amelynek három magyar, illetve magyar származású matematikus is kitüntetettje: a néhai Erdõs Pál akadémikus, a New Yorkban élõ Lax Péter professzor, és a sokáig az ELTÉ-n tanító, jelenleg a Microsoft kutatóintézetében dolgozó Lovász László akadémikus. A Fields-érmes matematikusok névsora Most pedig lássuk azon tudósok listáját, akik az 1936-os alapítás óta megkapták a magas kitüntetést.
