HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Euler, Leonhard Swiss mathematician. He developed the theory of differential equations and the calculus of variations, and worked in astronomy and optics. He also enlarged mathematical notation. Euler developed spherical trigonometry and demonstrated the significance of the coefficients of trigonometric expansions Euler's number (e, as it is now called) has various useful theoretical properties and is used in the summation of particular series.

Euler, Leonhard (1707-83)
Mathematician, born in Basel, Switzerland. He studied mathematics there under Jean Bernoulli, and became professor of physics (1731) and then of mathematics (1733) at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. In 1738 he lost the sight of one eye. In 1741 he moved to Berlin as director of mathematics and physics in the Berlin Academy, but returned to St. Petersburg in 1766, soon afterwards losing the sight of his other eye. He was a giant figure in 18th-c mathematics, publishing over 800 different books and papers, on every aspect of pure and applied mathematics, physics and astronomy. His Introductio in analysin infinitorum (1748) and later treatises on differential and integral calculus and algebra remained standard textbooks for a century and his notations, such as e and (pi) have been used ever since. For the princess of Anhalt-Dessau he wrote (1768-72), giving a clear non-technical outline of the main physical theories of the time. He had a prodigious memory, which enabled him to continue mathematical work and to compute complex calculations in his head when he was totally blind. He is without equal in the use of algorithms to solve problems.

Euler, Leonhard (1707-1783)

Swiss mathematician who was tutored by Johann Bernoulli . He worked at the Petersburg Academy and Berlin Academy of Science. He had a phenomenal memory, and once did a calculation in his head to settle an argument between students whose computations differed in the fiftieth decimal place. Euler lost sight in his right eye in 1735, and in his left eye in 1766. Nevertheless, aided by his phenomenal memory (and having practiced writing on a large slate when his sight was failing him), he continued to publish his results by dictating them. Euler was the most prolific mathematical writer of all times finding time (even with his 13 children) to publish over 800 papers in his lifetime. He won the Paris Academy Prize 12 times. When asked for an explanation why his memoirs flowed so easily in such huge quantities, Euler is reported to have replied that his pencil seemed to surpass him in intelligence. said of him "He calculated just as men breathe, as eagles sustain themselves in the air" (Beckmann 1971, p. 143; Boyer 1968, p. 482).     Leonhard Euler, from Basel, Switzerland, was one of the most prolific mathematicians of all time. He was born to Margaret and Reverend Paul Euler on April 15, 1707. Right from the start, his father, who was once a mathematician himself, wanted his son to be in the ministry. As Leonhard chose not to be in the ministry, he made many great advancements in the field of mathematics. Throughout his life, he published over 866 books and articles pertaining to mathematics, theoretical physics, and engineering mechanics. It was once said that "Euler calculated without apparent effort, as men breathe..." Although he was set back by partial blindness in his 20's, and then almost complete blindness in his later life, he was still able to discover some of the most important mathematical works of his time.
    Family
    Leonhard was married in Russia on January 7, 1734. He married Katharina Gsell, the daughter of a Swiss painter. Together, they had thirteen children, only five, however, survived infancy. Euler claimed that while holding a baby in his arms, and children playing around his feet, he made some of his best mathematical discoveries.
    He was sent to a school in Basel. While there, he lived with his grandmother on his mother's side. In 1720, at the age of 14, his father sent him to the University of Basel to prepare for the ministry, but get a general education first. He obtained a Master's Degree in philosophy three years later. He discovered that he was not content with the ministry, but liked mathematics better. He continued studying theology until his teacher, Johann Bernoulli, was able to convince Euler's father to let him study mathematics. Later, in 1727, he attended the Saint Petersburg Academy of Science. In 1730, Leonhard was appointed professor of physics, and three years later he became the professor of mathematics. Leonhard joined the Berlin Academy of Science in 1741. Later in 1744, he became director of the academy's mathematics section.

De uma família tradicionalmente dedicada à pesquisa científica, filho de um pastor luterano que tinha sido aluno de Jacques Bernoulli , este um matemático de renome à época, mas que preferiria que o filho seguisse a carreira teológica. Estudou matemática com Jean Bernoulli, tornando-se grande amigo dos seus dois filhos Nikolaus e Daniel . Além de matemática também estudou medicina, astronomia, física óptica, teologia e línguas estrangeiras com o pai e outros professores. Por indicação dos irmãos Bernoullis, a convite de Catarina I , que morreria pouco depois, assumiu a área de medicina e fisiologia na Academia de Ciências de São Petersburgo (1727). Antes de ir para a Rússia já havia recebido menção honrosa da Académie des Sciences de Paris (onde ganhou por 12 vezes o cobiçado prêmio bienal) por um ensaio sobre mastros de navio. Com o retorno de Daniel à Suíça, tornou-se o principal professor de matemática da Academia, contribuindo intensamente com o conteúdo e credibilidade da revista matemática da Academia: Commentarii Academiae Scientiarum Imperialis Petropolitanae .     In a 1736 paper which arguably began the field of topology, the great Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) proved that this was impossible. In fact Euler gives a criterion which allows one to quickly determine whether there is a solution for any similar problem with any number of bridges connecting any number of landmasses!
    Euler first noted that the problem is not changed if we replace the landmasses by vertices (red dots in the diagram) and the bridges by arcs connecting the vertices. We call the resulting assemblage of points and arcs a graph and define the degree of a vertex to be the number of arcs that lead to/from it. Euler proved:
    Theorem There exists a (at least one) path on a graph which travels along each arc exactly once if and only if the graph has at most two points of odd degree.
    Such a path on a graph, if it exists, is now called an Euler path
    The key to the proof of (one direction of) Euler's result is the realisation that if a vertex is not the initial or final vertex of a path and each bridge is only used once, then the number of arcs that are traversed leading to/from that vertex must be even (each time you go through a vertex, you use one arc to get there and another to leave). This also shows that if there are two vertices of odd degree, one must be the initial vertex of the Euler path and the other the final vertex. Incidentally, notice that the number of vertices of odd degree in any graph must be even since the sum of all the degrees is double the number of vertices.
