Maurits Cornelis Escher Dutch graphic artist (1898-1972) - One of my favorites, capturing many aspects of the 'impossible' in his works. His art can be roughly divided in: the landscape and the mathematical epochs. The first accounted for beautiful pictures of south italian landscapes, on woodcut and other techniques. The second (and that lasted until his death) was a time of experimeting with new notions of space and topology. This brought him together to many great mathematicians of his time, and his work sometimes was the only palpable thing they have to show what their work was about. His most famous pictures are those of the metamorphosis and the impossible. The first ones put in a single frame a complete "morphing" without any jump from one transformation to the other. The others depict impossible things, that could never happen. Like a ever climbing stair, a closed waterfall (on wich the water runs up all the time) and others. Many of his works in the last phase show different topologies and is considered by many the inspiration for fractal geometry. Some links to his images: On Stuttgart (ftp, by now sorry.)

He was brought up by his father, George Escher, who was a civil engineer, and his second wife Sarah who was the daughter of a government minister. He lived with his four older brothers, Arnold, Johan, Berend, and Edmond. Maurits attended both elementary and secondary school in Arnhem between 1912 and 1918, where he failed to shine in many of his subjects, but exhibited an early interest in both music and carpentry. People expressed the opinion that he possessed a mathematical brain but he never excelled in the subject at any stage during his schooling and treated the subject with some considerable unease. He wrote [7]:- At high school in Arnhem, I was extremely poor at arithmetic and algebra because I had, and still have, great difficulty with the abstractions of numbers and letters. When, later, in stereometry solid geometry , an appeal was made to my imagination, it went a bit better, but in school I never excelled in that subject. But our path through life can take strange turns.

Escher, Maurits Cornelius (1898-1972) To take a one week course with David Peat A text only version of this essay is available to download. In 1993-94 I acted as a consultant to the National Gallery of Canada for an exhibition of the work of Escher. Although Escher's status amongst critics and art curators is somewhat ambiguous the work of this Dutch artist work has attracted a considerable public, particularly for because of his play with visual and mathematical paradoxes. Escher's interest in tiling, figure-ground ambiguities and the illusions of recession in three dimensions are particularly attractive to scientists and mathematicians and his work was exhibited at the 1964 International Mathematical Congress in Amsterdam. The mathematician Roger Penrose also saw some of Escher's work, in the company of his father, Lionel Penrose a doctor and psychiatrist. Intrigued by Escher's approach Roger Penrose sketched an impossible figure - the Penrose triangle - which Escher later incorporated into several of his works. After Escher's death the mathematician regretted that he had not lived long enough to take advantage of the discovery of Penrose tiling. Another mathematician who took a professional interest in Escher's work was H.S.M.Coxeter. The Ottawa exhibition came about as the result of a generous donation of works by Escher's son who had emigrated to Canada. In preparation for the selection of works, the catalogue and educational activities at the gallery Brydon Smith from the National Gallery gathered us together for a highly stimulating series of meetings and discussions. Below are some notes arising out of these discussions. They are relatively rough and incomplete but, in view of the interest Escher continues to excite, they may be of interest to someone.

Uit dit huwelijk werden 3 zoons geboren. Escher bracht zijn jeugd grotendeels in Arnhem door, waar het gezin sinds 1903 was gaan wonen. Voor hem was de HBS-tijd een nachtmerrie met als enig lichtpunt de tekenlessen van F.W. van der Haagen. Deze ontdekte en stimuleerde Eschers tekentalent, leerde hem de techniek van de linoleumsnede. Op aanraden van zijn vader volgde Escher in 1919 een architectenopleiding aan de School voor Bouwkunde en Sierende Kunsten te Haarlem. Daar de bouwkunde hem niet lag, maar hij zeer geboeid werd door de lessen in grafische technieken van Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, die Eschers aanleg voor grafiek onderkende, schakelde Escher over op de grafische opleiding. De Mesquita werd zijn belangrijkste leermeester tot Escher in 1922 de School verliet. Tot De Mesquita in 1944 door de Duitsers naar een concentratiekamp werd weggevoerd - hij kwam daar om het leven - zou Escher met zijn geliefde leermeester in contact blijven.

Uit dit huwelijk werden 3 zoons geboren. Escher bracht zijn jeugd grotendeels in Arnhem door, waar het gezin sinds 1903 was gaan wonen. Voor hem was de HBS-tijd een nachtmerrie met als enig lichtpunt de tekenlessen van F.W. van der Haagen. Deze ontdekte en stimuleerde Eschers tekentalent, leerde hem de techniek van de linoleumsnede. Op aanraden van zijn vader volgde Escher in 1919 een architectenopleiding aan de School voor Bouwkunde en Sierende Kunsten te Haarlem. Daar de bouwkunde hem niet lag, maar hij zeer geboeid werd door de lessen in grafische technieken van Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, die Eschers aanleg voor grafiek onderkende, schakelde Escher over op de grafische opleiding. De Mesquita werd zijn belangrijkste leermeester tot Escher in 1922 de School verliet. Tot De Mesquita in 1944 door de Duitsers naar een concentratiekamp werd weggevoerd - hij kwam daar om het leven - zou Escher met zijn geliefde leermeester in contact blijven.
