Erlang
Erlang is a language developed at the Computer Science Laboratory at Ellemtel AB and is named after the Danish mathematician Agner Krarup Erlang. Erlang was first used inside Ericsson where it was used to write real-time control programs for telephone exchanges and network switches. It is targeted at the communications industry but is a general programming language suitable for almost any applications. The following paragraph describes the most important properties of Erlang. It has been taken directly from the book Concurrent Programming in Erlang
Declarative syntax.
Erlang has a declarative syntax and is largely free from side-effects.
Concurrent.
Erlang has a process-based model of concurrency with asynchronous message passing. The concurrency mechanisms in Erlang are light-weight, i.e. processes require little memory, and creating and deleting processes and message passing require little computational effort.
Real-time.
Erlang is intended for programming soft real-time systems where response times in the order of milliseconds are required.

Who was Erlang?
According to the biography of Erlang published by the School of Mathematics and Statistics at University of St. Andrews, Scotland , Erlang's biography is as follows. This document is used with the permission of University of St. Andrews. Agner Krarup Erlang Born: 1 Jan 1878 in Lonborg (near Tarm), Jutland, Denmark
Died: 3 Feb 1929 in Copenhagen, Denmark
Agner Erlang was descended on his mother's side from Thomas Fincke . His father was a schoolmaster and Erlang was educated at his father's school when he was young. He took his examinations in Copenhagen at the age of 14 and passed with special distinction after having to obtain special permission to take the examinations because he was below the minimum age. He returned to Lonberg and taught at his father's school for two years. In 1896 he passed the entrance examination to the University of Copenhagen with distinction and, since his parents were poor, he was given free board and lodgings in a College of the University of Copenhagen.

Applied Probability Society
The Society is concerned with the application of probability theory to systems that involve random phenomena and promotes the development and use of methods for the improvement of evaluation, control and design of these systems.
Society Awards:
Best Publication Award
This award is for outstanding contributions to the field of applied probability. The award is accompanied by a plaque and a $1,000 honorarium. The Award is given once every two years, and is awarded in fall of odd-numbered years. To be eligible for the award, the contribution (book, paper or set of papers) must meet the following criteria:
  • the contribution must be in Applied Probability; the contribution must have been published (in the case of a set, at least one member of the set) during one-to-four years prior to the year of the award; the contribution must have been written in English, or must have accurate translation available in English;

A. K. Erlang
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Agner Krarup Erlang (Born at Lonborg (Lønborg), near Tarm , in Jutland Denmark on January 1 ; died at Copenhagen , Denmark on February 3 ), was a Danish mathematician, statistician, and engineer who invented the fields of queueing theory and traffic engineering He was the son of a schoolmaster and with his maternal mathematical ancestor Thomas Fincke , he demonstrated his potential from an early age by being able to read books upside down. He passed the Preliminary Examination offered by the University of Copenhagen, with distinction, at age 14, after receiving dispensation to sit because he was younger than the usual minimum age. For the next two years he taught alongside his father.

Queueing theory
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Queueing theory (spelled queuing theory by Americans) is the mathematical study of waiting lines (or queues ). There are several related processes, arriving at the back of the queue, waiting in the queue (essentially a storage process), and being served by the server at the front of the queue. It is applicable in transport and telecommunication . Occasionally linked to ride theory A. K. (Agner Krarup) Erlang , a Danish engineer who worked for the Copenhagen Telephone Exchange, published the first paper on queueing theory in Kendall introduced the A/B/C type queueing notation in . It has since been extended: 1. A code describing the arrival process. The codes used are:

The two terms are similar, but different: the first, Staffing, focuses on the work schedules of the support team, days into the future. The latter, Workforce Planning, has to do with the size of staff required to meet future demand for work. Why is this so important? The majority of the cost of a support organization is the support staff. Generally, the staff costs are 65 to 80 percent of the overall support organization budget. If you can improve the manner in which you do staffing and workforce planning by 10 percent, your overall budget performance improves by 6.5 to 8 percent. This can be a tremendous cost savings and many organizations achieve even greater performance improvements. In addition to cost reductions, you can begin staffing your support to be in alignment with the work volume peaks and valleys. This results in improvements in speed to answer, first call resolution rates (right staff on the phones when they are needed), and improved customer satisfaction levels.

Erlang
Erlang is a programming language named for Agner Erlang (1878-1929), the Danish telecommunications engineer. The Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson (primarily known in the United States for its cellular phones) developed the Erlang language, which is now primarily used in telecommunications equipment. The language grew out of the Ericsson Computer Science Laboratory from a team that included Joe Armstrong, Robert Virding, and Mike Williams. Erlang is good for telecommunications devices because it is fault-tolerant (meaning that it prevents errors from crashing the system) and lets programs be easily shared and distributed between systems. Also, Erlang’s design lets a program assembled on one computer run on any other also running Erlang, and Erlang includes special support for networking issues. Erlang is available as an open-source language from Erlang ( http://wwwerlang.org

Erlang - a unit of traffic
An Erlang is a unit of telecommunications traffic measurement. Strictly speaking, an Erlang represents the continuous use of one voice path. In practice, it is used to describe the total traffic volume of one hour. For example, if a group of user made 30 calls in one hour, and each call had an average call duration of 5 minutes, then the number of Erlangs this represents is worked out as follows: Minutes of traffic in the hour number of calls x duration Minutes of traffic in the hour 30 x 5 Minutes of traffic in the hour Hours of traffic in the hour Hours of traffic in the hour Traffic figure 2.5 Erlangs

Also see erlang , a unit of telephone traffic. Erlang is a programming language designed for developing robust systems of programs that can be distributed among different computers in a network. Named for the Danish mathematician Agner Krarup Erlang, the language was developed by the Ericsson Computer Sciences Lab to build software for its own telecommunication products. In use for a number of years at Ericsson and other companies, Erlang is taught in over 80 universities and colleges world-wide and is freely available as open source code. Erlang is similar to Java in that it uses a virtual machine and supports multithreading . However, whereas the Java development community focuses on Web applications, Erlang is aimed at the market for extremely robust servers and embedded systems. Erlang is described as a functional programming language, meaning that it emphasizes the evaluation of expressions rather than the execution of commands. The expressions use functions to derive basic values. (Two other well-known programming models are
