Groups, Graphs, and Paul Erdos
Many people have the impression that mathematical research is largely a solitary pursuit. They imagine a mathematician squirreled away in some dingy garret, lonely wilderness cabin, or sparsely furnished cubicle, oblivious to everyday concerns and focused on a single problem, scribbling inscrutable equations across scraps of paper and thinking long and hard before emerging with a eureka and a proof. The dramatic announcement in 1993 by Andrew Wiles that he had proved Fermat's Last Theorem appeared to belong to this category of discovery. Wiles had virtually separated himself from the rest of the mathematical community for nearly 8 years to work on this problem. Only a select few were aware of what he was trying to accomplish. Yet Wiles had relied heavily on the previous work of other mathematicians who had tackled the same problem. He had occasionally tested his ideas on a few trusted experts in areas of mathematics relevant to his approach. And when reviewers later discovered a flaw in his original chain of logic, he obtained help from one of his former graduate students, Richard Taylor, to fill in the gap and complete the proof. At the same time, the relative isolation that Wiles sought is certainly not the rule in mathematical research. Doing mathematics is really a remarkably social process. The abundance of meetings, conferences, workshops, colloquia, seminars, and other gatherings of mathematicians attests to the importance of collaboration. Electronic communication speeds and facilitates such interaction.

Nadie sabe bien de dónde vino la primera voz, el primer ojo o el primer oído que describió lo sucedido. "Se dice que...", "por ahí cuentan...", "oí decir...", son siempre las primeras palabras cuando se relata una leyenda. Yo comenzaré mi relato, para seguir la tradición, del mismo modo: Aunque era húngaro, hace mucho tiempo que vivía en el país de las matemáticas (¿existirá?), recorriendo el mundo de congreso en congreso. Era realmente alguien especial. En nuestro siglo donde las matemáticas han sido fuertemente dominadas por los "doctores teóricos", él fue un príncipe resolviendo problemas, y un absoluto monarca planteándolos. Algunos lo llaman el "Euler de nuestro tiempo". Para concentrarse plenamente en su trabajo, Erdös se deshizo de las cargas cotidianas de la vida: encontrar un lugar donde vivir, comprar comida, firmar cheques. "La propiedad perjudica" decía. Sus colegas se encargaban de él, le prestaban dinero, lo alojaban, le daban de comer, le compraban ropa y hasta pagaban sus impuestos. A cambio, él los alimentaba con nuevas ideas y retos, con problemas por resolver y brillantes maneras de abordarlos. El doctor Laszlo quien lo conocía bien, decía "sus amigos lo quieren ciegamente, devolviéndole como pueden la luz que él trae a sus casas y oficinas". Those of us familiar with publishing scientific papers in journals may be interested to hear about the great mathematician, Paul Erdos . With more than 450 collaborators, Erdos wrote over 1,500 papers , more than any mathematician who ever lived.
Many of Erdos's mathematical collaborators were prolific themselves. This situation has led many mathematicians to say 'I have an Erdos Number of 2', meaning they wrote a paper with someone who had once written a paper with the great Erdos. Anyone who writes a paper with someone with an Erdos Number of 2 receives an Erdos number of 3, and so on. Small Erdos numbers are very prestigious, possessed by only the world's most brilliant mathematicians, making 'Erdos Numbers' an entertaining topic at mathematical cocktail parties, and the subject of some careful, but light-hearted, study. Prompted by my mathematician friend, Richard Green (who has an Erdos number of 3) , I recently discovered that I had an Erdos number of (details below, for anyone interested), as do many other members of the
