http://www.greenmanreview.com/CD/cd_strawberry_lass.html
Paul Epstein, The Strawberry Lass (self-produced, 2002)
Paul Epstein lives in West Virginia and plays in a contra dance band called the Contrarians. He has recorded some childrens' music and some original songs, but on The Strawberry Lass it is only his fiddle and guitar that sing. All the tunes are originals. They are double tracked so that Epstein's fiddle is backed by his own guitar, though sometimes the fiddle and guitar interplay. Reminiscent of Welsh musician Sian Phillips, Epstein's fiddle voice is mellow and thick like honey rather than powdered sugar. While this path has a charm all its own, it cuts the effect of ornamental nuances. In addition, there's not the treble contrast of crisp e-string notes up on the high end. To my ear, the style is great for contra dances, fine for Epstein's dance tunes, but the airs seem to drag a bit. But maybe my ear has been turned too far by upscale Kaustinen fiddlers! Epstein's arrangements and tunes show influences from traditional American, celtic, and jazz musics. There are several pretty compositions on the album. An air in the same style as "Ashokan Farewell" called "Appalachian Morning" begs memorization with its turns and strong melody. "Wild Ponies of Chincoteague," a mid-tempo celtic-jazz based tune, is also a winner. My favorites, though, are the dance tunes, which he might be more at home with, sporting titles like "Leapin' Liz," and "Hannah On the Mountain." For euro-folks, one composition, "Penina's Wedding" has a strong jazz-klezmer ambience, without really leaving behind Epstein's general style.

Research Interests Research in my laboratory centers on second messengers and signal transduction. Particular focus has been on cyclic nucleotide metabolism and protein phosphorylation, with emphasis on analysis of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDE). It has become apparent, in recent years, that PDE is a complex enzyme system consisting of many different forms, some of which are tissue selective. Hence, by inhibiting or altering the expression of specific forms of PDE, we can alter cAMP levels in specific cell types, and change fundamental physiological processes in one cell type, without affecting others. Thus, a main research goal in this laboratory is to clone the genes for different forms of PDE and examine their tissue distribution and regulation of their expression during development and in different pathophysiological states.

As currently performed, risk analyses of chemicals in the environment account only for direct effects: cancers, birth defects, premature births, etc. But chemicals like dioxin, PCBs and pesticides may have even greater indirect affects on emerging infectious diseases. Through immune suppression and by mimicking hormones, these chemicals may affect bird and fish populations not merely as sentinels of future human impacts. Weakened bird populations may harbor an elevated burden of viruses (e.g., Eastern Equine, Western Equine and St. Louis Encephalitides); and, with reduced numbers of inland fish (consumers of insect larvae), mosquito carriers may flourish. Morbilliform viruses (measles) have been fatal to aquatic and terrestrial mammals (Australian horses, Serengeti lions), and an iridovirus may be involved in the disappearance of frogs from six continents. How do these evolving pandemics across a wide taxonomic range reflect altered agents, weakened hosts and environmental change?
True impact assessment must include ecological impacts, not merely for aesthetic reasons, but for the biological control of opportunistic pests and pathogens. Owls refuged in Northwest forests, for example, control rodent populations involved in Lyme disease and Hantavirus events that occur elsewhere. To fully assess impacts, obvious first order results must be integrated with background changes, such as habitat loss that crowds bird populations thus amplifying contagion, and wide temperature fluctuations and altered timing of the seasons (climate instability) that disturb species' synchronies.

37. Global Warming And You
This will cause the expected number of deaths related to heat to double by the year2020 (epstein, paul R.). Also a warm climate is one which mosquitoes live
http://www.priweb.org/ed/ICTHOL/ICTHOL02_peer_review_papers/72.html
Global Warming and You
Many human activities cause global warming, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
One type of effect that will be influenced by global warming are health effects. Although the temperature of the atmosphere is rising, it is very unevenly causing nights, winters, and latitudes higher than 50 degrees to be much hotter. This will cause the expected number of deaths related to heat to double by the year 2020 (
These are just a few of the many effects that global warming has and will have on the world if it continues. People need to address the fact that this is happening and understand that it will effect them each individually. Global warming is not something that will happen over night, but it will happen sooner than many people believe that it will. Once it has gone too far, there is no turning back what is already done.
