  • Arthur Stanley Eddington, born in Kendal, England, on December 28, 1882, of Quaker parents, was a brilliant scholar. His first position after graduating from Cambridge University in 1905 was that of chief assistant to the Astronomer Royal at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, where he excelled in practical astronomy. In 1913 he was appointed Plumian Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge, and a year later he was made director of the observatory. The Internal Constitution of the Stars Eddington suspected that the chief source of stellar energy was subatomic and that hydrogen played a dominant role in supplying this energy. Later, in 1938 and 1939, Bethe introduced the theory for the fusion of hydrogen into helium, which clarified the picture of stellar energy generation and substantiated Eddington's speculations. In 1919 Eddington organized a solar-eclipse expedition to Brazil to photograph the stars in the neighborhood of the eclipsed Sun. This was to test whether or not stars seen adjacent to the Sun's limb would appear to have shifted away from the Sun and their normal position relative to each other, as predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity. Although difficult to measure, the observed shift in position was in rough agreement with Einstein's predicted valuethe first observational test of relativity theory. Eddington's efforts to verify Einstein's theory of relativity continued into the 1920s. Through his popular writings and his book

Arthur Eddington 's father, Arthur Henry Eddington, taught at a Quaker training college in Lancashire before moving to Kendal to become headmaster of Stramongate School. He died of typhoid in an epidemic which swept the country in 1884 before his son was two years old. Arthur Eddington's mother, Sarah Ann Stout, came from Darlington and, like her husband, was also from a Quaker family. On Arthur Henry Eddington's death she was left to bring up Arthur and his older sister with relatively little income. The family moved to Weston-super-Mare where at first Arthur was educated at home before spending three years at a preparatory school. In 1893 Arthur entered Brymelyn School in Weston which was mainly for boarders but he did not board at the school, being one of a small number of day pupils. The school provided a good education within the limited resources available to it and allowed Arthur to excel in mathematics and English literature. His progress through the school was rapid and he earned high distinction in mathematics. The level to which the school was able to take Arthur was, however, not very advanced and his good grounding in mathematics stopped short of reaching the differential and integral calculus.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Sir Arthur Eddington ) was arguably the most important astrophysicist from the early 20th century . He is most famous for his work regarding the Theory of Relativity Eddington wrote an article, Report on the relativity theory of gravitation , which announced Einstein 's theory of general relativity to the English-speaking world. Because of World War I , German science was not known very much in England. This same war caused problems for Eddington himself when he was called up for military service . Being a Quaker and a pacifist , he refused to serve in the army, and wanted to be allowed to do alternative service instead, but such a thing was not possible at the time. Scientific friends of his solved the problem by successfully arguing to relieve him from military duty because of his importance for science. After the war, Eddington travelled to the island of

English physicist who theoretically investigated stellar interiors. He calculated that the temperature at the center of the Sun would have to be in the millions of degrees Kelvin and published the mass-luminosity law for stars in 1924. He also worked out the causes for brightness variations in Cepheid variables On theoretical grounds, he predicted that Betelgeuse would have an angular diameter as large as 0.051 arc seconds. Eddington was one of the first to appreciate the importance of Einstein's theories of special and general relativity and published a treatise on the subject. He led an expedition to observed the total solar eclipse of 1919, in which the bending of light rays predicted by general relativity was observed (although it was later shown that the uncertainties were too large to make any definitive statement). Eddington was arrogant, and in his later years, cooked up pseudoscientific "proofs" on "physical" grounds that the fine structure constant was exactly 1/136. When experiments yielded a more accurate value, Eddington produced another proof "proving" that
