Alfred Dixon was the older brother of Arthur Dixon . Alfred was educated at the Quaker School in Kendal. From Kendal he went to Bath where he attended Kingswood School. Whittaker , in [4], describes him as a prodigy:- ... the school examiner, finding that Dixon obtained the maximum marks in papers set at the annual examination, one year deliberately set a problem that could not be done, only to receive from Dixon an elaborate proof of its impossibility. In 1883 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge and he graduated in 1886 as Senior Wrangler (placed first). He had been taught by a number of famous mathematicians at Cambridge, including Glaisher , Rouse Ball Forsyth and he attended lectures by Cayley . Dixon was appointed a Fellow of Trinity College in 1888 and was awarded a Smith's prize. Dixon was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at Queen's College, Galway, Ireland in 1893. (This university is now named University College, Galway.) Dixon's appointment was to fill the chair left vacant when George J Allman, a noted historian of mathematics, retired. The appointment to Galway seems to have been good for Dixon since his mathematical output improved in both quantity and quality from this time.

THE DIXON STORY
In 1930 an eager young man showed up in New York City. He wanted to be an actor and had already been through horrendous problems with his speech. He was a stutterer. In the 1920's when you stuttered, the typical answer was, there was something wrong with your brain. It could never be fixed. Alfred Dixon could not afford to believe this. He set about correcting himself and succeeded so superbly that he gave the remaining thirty-four years of his life to helping everyone else, using the speech methods he had devised in desperation to save himself. In this year of 2000, approaching the millenium, the Alfred and Elizabeth Dixon Speech Systems have been a developing process for 67 years. Elizabeth Dixon, his wife, who has been teaching for forty years, believes that as a result of two people working together to perfect the care and development of such speech methods, the Dixons have "tried-and- true" solutions to voice and speech problems. Through the work of Alfred and Elizabeth Dixon, a series of Speech Systems have evolved like none other. Their reputation took Elizabeth Dixon all the way to No. 10 Downing Street, London in 1984 and 1985 to the office of Margaret Thatcher, the Prime Minister of England.

Lt. Colonel Frederick Alfred Dixon, 2nd son of John Picken Dixon and Alice Mary Dixon, was born on 27th March, 1880, at The Mount, Marton, near Blackpool, and died on 18th January 1925, at Bramley Mead, Whalley, after a three month's illness, though he had not enjoyed robust health for a number of years. He was educated at Rossall, and later became a Director of the firm of John Baines Ltd. who controlled three large mills in Blackburn. Colonel Dixon had a distinguished military career beginning in 1899 when he obtained a subaltern's commission in the 2nd West Lancashire Volunteer Artillery and served in the following year in the Tipperary Artillery. He was gazetted to the R.F.A. in 1901 and then obtained a regular commission in the Indian army, joining the 25th Battery R.F.A. in 1902. The next year he won the tent pegging, and heads and posts competitions, open to the whole of the British Army in India. In 1908 he got his jacket in the R.H.A., P. Battery. In addition to his army career Colonel Dixon was a keen sportsman and in hot weather when there was no home leave he would go off big game shooting and did a number of interesting expeditions, records of which he kept by

Weaver, David Stathem,Papers,
MC 26 This collection relates to David Stathem Weaver's career in agricultural engineering and extension work at North Carolina State University. In a personal quest to "relieve human drudgery by mechanical means," Weaver served as a farm leader and educator throughout North Carolina from 1923 to 1966. Known as the "father of rural electrification in North Carolina," he conducted a survey, convincing then President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Congress that rural North Carolinians needed electricity. The collection contains speeches, news clippings, correspondence, and photographs. Of particular interest are four scrapbooks dedicated to Weaver's career in agriculture within the University and the fraternity Alpha Zeta. One scrapbook contains a letter written by his maternal grandfather in 1862 that describes his experiences as a Union soldier in the Civil War. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dept. of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. Records
