www.frightnights.co.uk The First International Man of Mystery - John Dee By Martin Jeffrey His contemporaries called him a charlatan and an impostor. It is rumoured that he worked for Queen Elizabeth I's secret service. He gained a Batchelor of the Arts at Trinity College. John Dee was more than a learned man; he also studied the occult and magic. Born in 1527 in Mortlake, at the time a village on the Thames outside of London, Dee had a retentive memory and proved to be an apt pupil. By the age of 15 he was studying at St John's College, Cambridgeshire and claimed in his diary to have studied 18 hours a day! John Dee - Queen Elizabeth I’s Philosopher John Dee spent many of his early years travelling and studying Europe. In Belgium Dee met the Flemish cartographer Mercator and brought back with him to England two of Mercator's globes and newly devised astronomical instruments. Many see this as Dee's first foray into industrial espionage, claiming that Dee could see the relevance of England increasing its knowledge of navigation so that it could build its empire. Believing this he passed back to England all the information he learned from Mercator and others on his journey. Royal Connections from an early age John Dee had a long lasting relationship with the Monarchy that began when he gained a reputation as a scientist and occultist. Dee had started to cast horoscopes based on the knowledge he had learnt overseas and his talents were soon noticed by the court of Queen Mary. He was asked to cast horoscopes for both the Queen and her prospective bridegroom, Prince Philip of Spain.

by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - December 28, 2000
Elizabethan England magus John Dee (1527-1608) is best known in occult circles for the 'Enochian Keys', a series of nineteen magical incantations received by Dee and collaborator Edward Kelley during a period of Angel/Spirit scrying (1583-1589), which has dwarfed Dee's other Work. Some researchers have suggested that the 'Wisdom of Enoch' and the 'Adamic' language concealed counter-espionage codes, and subtle para-politics designed to symbolically transmutate the collective unconsciousness (his trademark signature '007' influenced Ian Fleming's James Bond). Dee played a pivotal role in influencing Elizabethan England, from the time of his studies at Louvain University (1548). His knowledge of 'Mathesis' (mathematical magic), 'Theurgy' (supernatural powers), and interest in geography, mathematics, navigation, and cryptography brought him to the attention of Queen Elizabeth (he served her as Royal Astrologer), who eventually appointed him in 1592 as Warden of Christ's College (until 1605).

Click here for audio of Episode 474. Today, a mathematical magician helps end magic. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. J ohn Dee was born in England in 1527. When he died in 1607, he left us all wondering: was he a mathematician or a sorcerer? Dee graduated from Cambridge at 18. He went on to study and lecture in Europe, and his reputation soared. He studied navigation with the same Mercator who gave us the map projection. An explorer later offered to give Dee Canada in exchange for his knowledge of maps. Dee was expert in astronomy, astrology, math, alchemy, and much more. The Protestant rulers Edward and Elizabeth consulted him. But so did Catholic Queen Mary. The lines between astronomy, astrology, alchemy, and magic were very fuzzy in Dee's time. Maybe we saw our ignorance of nature's forces more clearly then than we do now. Dee raised essential questions about knowledge. Still, he looked for answers in a magic crystal as well as in a chemical retort. In 1570 he wrote a 50-page preface for the first English translation of Euclid's geometry. It showed how geometry fit into the whole of science. He began with a huge chart a road map of human knowledge. He resolved science into two parts. "Arithmetike" and "geometrie" were primary. The rest, he said, was derivative. Things like "perspectiue, astronomie, cosmographie, astrologie, and musike" all flowed from mathematics.

John Dee and the English Calendar: Science, Religion and Empire John Dee and the English Calendar: Science, Religion and Empire by Dr Robert Poole, St Martin's College, Lancaster Preface De Revolutionibus (1543) had started out as a contribution to the project of calendar reform. The issue was only tackled, however, towards the end of the counter-reformation council of Trent, which may have had in mind a project similar to that of Nicaea: bringing a basic unity to a divided church on the basis of common observance of Christian festivals. The reform was propogated as a papal bull in 1582, which did three things: it introduced a new method of calcluating Easter; it removed ten days from October 1582 to bring the calendar back to the same relation with the movements of the heavens which it had had at the time of Nicaea; and it modified the system of leap years to keep it there. The Gregorian calendar was accepted throughout the Roman catholic world, though usually at a different time than that envisaged in the papal bull and by civil decree. Most protestant countries rejected it, as they rejected the authority of the church of Rome. There was considerable controversy over the new calendar, and in lands where protestants and catholics were intermingled it caused great trouble; Bohemia's "kalenderstreit" was notorious. Some of the problems became known to English diplomats and privy counsellors, particularly secretary of state Walsingham, who received a copy of the bull in diplomatic correspondence.

ohn Dee's mentoring role in the Frobisher expeditions may have been important, but was largely informal and behind-the-scenes. John Dee Lord Burghley . At Louvain he studied with experts in cosmography He put this knowledge at the service of the 1553 expedition seeking a northeast passage and, as a result, became a scientific adviser to the Muscovy Company . Years later, having read Gilbert 's unpublished treatise advocating a search for a northwest passage, and learning that one of the Company's agents, Michael Lok , was involved in such a project, Dee showed interest and was again brought in as an adviser in 1576. He gave a crash-course to Frobisher Hall and others in the mathematical science of navigation, and may have recommended works on cosmography and navigation to be acquired for the voyages. In gratitude, Lok bought Dee some shares in the venture; Dee may have invested a little of his own money too. Dee was one of the commissioners appointed to oversee the conduct of the expeditions and the smelting operations , and probably contributed to the drafting of the instructions governing the latter two voyages.

Johannes (John) Dee
(1527-1608 e.v.)
by T. Apiryon
English alchemist, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, philosopher and magician. Dee was the court astrologer to both Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I, and, according to legend, conjured a windstorm which resulted in the defeat of the invading Spanish Armada. Dee was the editor of the first English translation of Euclid's "Elements." Dee, along with Edward Kelly were responsible for the Enochian system of magical intercourse with a hierarchy of angelic beings, a system of great importance in the magical technology of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and of Aleister Crowley, forming the basis of Liber CDXVIII: The Vision and the Voice (in The Equinox, Vol I, No. V, March 1911 e.v.) and Liber LXXXIX vel Chanokh (in The Equinox , Vol. I, Nos. VII and VIII, March and September 1912 e.v.). Some believe Dee to be the true instigator of the Rosicrucian movement. His major published work was Monas Hieroglyphica (1564).
