He was a medical doctor who had a practice in Lisburn. John junior was educated at home when he was young but then entered the Methodist College in Belfast to complete his school education before entering Queen's College, Belfast. The Queen's University in Belfast had been established in 1845 and Campbell felt great loyalty to this institution. As Elliott writes in [1]:- He always remained a very loyal Ulsterman, in every sense, and expressed warm gratitude to those under whom he studied in his first university. Campbell graduated from the Queen's University in 1884 and won a scholarship to study at the University of Oxford in England. He entered Hertford College founded in Oxford in 1874. He became a fellow of Hertford College in 1887 and was appointed as a tutor at the College. He later was appointed as a lecturer at University College. As to his success as a lecturer in Oxford Elliott , in [1], gives the following details:- Of his devotion to duty in Oxford it is impossible to speak too highly, and the general affection felt for him can hardly be exaggerated. His success with pupils was marked, all the more marked because all saw that he was at home, mathematically, in regions above them, and wondered that he could come down to their modest level. He possessed capacity for administration also, serving his College well as Vice-Principal, with Principal's authority, and as Bursar, at times of special need.

He has consented to its use provided we make no changes in spelling, grammar, sentence structure, etc. etc. [Shirley Campbell] "A TRIBUTE TO JOHN ROBERT CAMPBELL We are gathered here this morning to remember and to pay tribute to John Robert Campbell: Husband, Father and Friend. John was born in Georgetown, British Guiana, on 4th June 1935 (he was a week to the day younger than I) and passed away in Halifax on Friday 7th February 1997. When I think of John Campbell I think of one of my very closest friends. He was my mentor as we shared so many things over the years: large and small, humorous and serious. We spoke on the phone nearly every day. He would ring me at 5:50 each morning and I would utter a few sleepy replies, and he would say 'Go back to sleep,' which I usually did! Often later on in the morning he would ring again or I would phone him and we would talk about news items or letters to the editor of the newspaper. As he was an active Tory and my political point of view is somewhat opposite there would often be some lively discussions! His sense of hunour was profound, and he loved to torment anyone he could get a rise out of, particularly Maryam. He always made little jokes of everything which I feel hid a more serious side, and was a facade to cover his own feelings about people and things. He had a deep affection for his family which he usually hid under a banter of bluster and torment. From his friends he also hid his affections for the most part, though one would know from little comments made from time to time that he deeply cared.

John Campbell A Brief Resume Since August 2001 I have held a post-doctoral position in the Theory Group of the High-Energy Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory . I was previously a post-doctoral Research Associate in the Theoretical Physics Group at Fermilab . I joined the Fermilab group in September 1998 after completing my graduate studies at the University of Durham , where I worked in the Physics department as a member of the Centre for Particle Theory I am currently responsible for scheduling the theory seminars at Argonne, please contact me if you are interested in giving a talk. The first Campbell Award was presented at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1973. Since then the Award has been presented in various parts of the world: at California State University at Fullerton; at St. John's College, Oxford; at the World SF Writers Conference in Dublin; in Stockholm; at the World SF meeting in Dublin again; and since 1979 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The Award was created to honor the late editor of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, which is now named Analog . Campbell, who edited the magazine from 1937 until his death in 1971, is called, by many writers and scholars, the father of modern science fiction. Writers and critics Harry Harrison and Brian W. Aldiss established the award in Campbell's name as a way of continuing his efforts to encourage writers to produce their best possible work. The Award differs from the other two major awards in the field by being restricted to the novel and by its method of selection. The Hugo Awards are voted upon by some thousand of the several thousand members who pay advance fees to attend the World Science Fiction Convention, which meets annually at different locations on Labor Day weekend. The Nebula Awards are voted by some hundred of the nearly one thousand members of the Science Fiction Writers of America and presented at the annual Nebula Award meeting usually held late in April.
