William Molyneux's Copy BRIGGS, Henry Arithmetica logarithmica sive logarithmorum chiliades triginta, pro numeris naturali serie crescentibus ab unitate ad 20,000: et a 90,000 ad 100,000... London, William Jones, 1624 Folio (303 x 200 mm), pp [8] 88 [300] [ff 6, loosely inserted], with woodcut printer's device on title; a very good copy in contemporary calf, ruled in blind, rebacked, in a slipcase. £5500
First edition, the Molyneux family copy (see below), the first tables of base-ten logarithms and the source of those in use today. Soon after its publication, Briggs saw a copy of Napier's Logarithmorum canonis descriptio (1614), and from that point he devoted his life to the study of logarithms. One of Briggs's achievements was to change the logarithms of Napier into a form in which the logarithm of 1 is zero and that of 10 is 1, i.e. base-ten logarithms (Napier had used logarithms which were closer to hyperbolic logarithms, although they did not have the important property that the logarithm of 1 is zero). Briggs's work culminated in the present work, in which he tabulated thirty thousand base-ten logarithms, each to 14 decimal places, those of numbers from 1 to 20,000 and from 90,000 to 100,000.
This book has been underestimated by many historians, who have regarded Briggs merely as the slave and drudge of his master, Napier. However, as Goldstine points out, Briggs is the true inventor of the calculus of finite differences, and the first discoverer of any case of the binomial theorem for a fractional exponent - one half - almost 50 years before the statement of the general binomial formula by Newton (normally said to be the first 'discoverer' of the binomial theorem) and the latter's work on finite differences. In fact, Briggs's method of computing logarithms was based on the repeated taking of square roots, making use of the binomial expansion. Whiteside points out the curious fact that the first use of a series approximation to find logarithms was not of the logarithm but of the square root.

McFarlane’s Lives and Exploits of Banditti and Robbers ‘(London, 1837) is a useful introduction to the subject. The author saw a part of what he wrote about, and gives many references, particularly for Italy- A good bibliography of Spanish brigandage will be found in the Resena Historica de Ia Guardia Civil of Eugenio de Ia Iglesia (Madrid, 1898). For actual pictures of the life, nothing is better than the English Travellers and Italian Brigands of W. J. C. Moens (London, 1866), and The Brigands of the Morea, by S. Soteropoulos, translated by the Rev. J. 0. Bagdon (London, 1868). (D. H.) See A. Holder, Altceltischer Sprachschatz, i. (1896), for ancient authorities; J. BRIGG (properly GLANFORD BRIGGS or GLAMFORD BRIDGE), a market town in the North Lindsey or Brigg parliamentary division of Lincolnshire, England, situated on the river Ancholme, which affords water communication with the Humber. Pop. of urban district (1901) 3137. It is 23 m. by road north of Lincoln, and is served by the Grimsby line of the Great Central railway. Trade is principally agricultural. In 1885 a remarkable boat, assigned to early British workmanship, was unearthed near the river; it is hollowed out of the trunk of an oak, and measures 48 ft. 6 in. by about 5 ft. Other prehistoric relics have also been discovered. BRIGGS, CHARLES AUGUSTUS (1841- ), American Hebrew scholar and theologian, was born in New York City on the I5th of January 1841. He was educated at the university of Virginia (1857—1860), graduated at the Union Theological Seminary in 1863, and studied further at the university of Berlin. He was pastor of the Presbyterian church of Roselle, New Jersey, 1869—1874, and professor of Hebrew and cognate languages in Union Theological Seminary 1874—1891, and of Biblical theology there from 1891 to 1904, when he became professor of theological encyclopaedia and symbolics. From i88o to 1890 he was an editor of the Presbyterian Review. In 1892 he was tried for heresy by the presbytery of New York and acquitted. The charges were based upon his inaugural address of the preceding year. In brief they were as follows:

Briggs, Henry 1561-1630, English mathematician. He was the first professor of geometry at Gresham College, London (1596-1619), and Savilian professor of astronomy at Oxford (from 1619). After publication of Napier's work on logarithms in 1614, Briggs suggested that the logarithms be tabulated to the base 10, and Napier agreed to the alteration. Briggs wrote Arithmetica logarithmica (1624), a work containing logarithmic tables for 30,000 natural numbers to 14 places. His logarithms are known today as common logarithms.

    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/B/Briggs/1.html
    Briggs, Henry
English mathematician, with John Napier one of the founders of calculation by logarithms. Briggs's tables remain the basis of those used to this day.
Briggs was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, and studied at Cambridge, where he became a lecturer. He was professor of geometry at the newly established Gresham College, London, 1596-1620, and then became professor of geometry at Oxford.
In 1614 Scottish mathematician John Napier had published his discovery of logarithms, and Briggs went to Edinburgh to meet him 1616. On this and subsequent visits the two men worked together to simplify Napier's original logarithms. It seems most probable that the idea of having a table of logarithms with 10 for their base was originally conceived by Briggs; the first such tables were published by him 1617, under the title Logarithmorum Chilias Prima, and were followed in 1624 by the Arithmetica Logarithmica, in which the tables were given to 14 significant figures.
The logarithms of Briggs (and Napier) were logarithms of sines, a reflection of their interest in astronomy and navigation. For that reason Briggs's logarithms were 109 times 'larger' than those in modern tables.

Search for all pages containing "Aldrich, John" John Aldrich (c.1520-82), of Norwich, was a common councillor of Wymer from 1541 and Alderman of Ber Street from 1545 to 1582. He served as Sheriff in 1551, Mayor in 1558 and 1570, and MP for Norwich in 1555, 1558 and 1572. He was a mercer and grocer who traded in wool and yarn. He lived opposite St Clement's churchyard and owned the manor of Frodwick in Essex. He was the overseer of Holme Street Poorhouse from 1553 and his Poor Law scheme during his second mayoralty was the inspiration for his Poor Law Bill in the 1572 Parliament. Also during his second mayoralty, there was a Roman Catholic conspiracy in Norwich. He had possible Puritan leanings as he supported the appointment of the radical Robert Harrison as schoolmaster at Aylsham, his will rejected prayers for his soul and he left money to four preachers, among them the Puritan John More.
