Satyendranath Bose studied at the University of Calcutta, then taught there in 1916, taught at the University of Dacca (1921-45), then returned to Calcutta (1945-56). He did important work in quantum theory , in particular on Planck 's black body radiation law. Bose sent his work Planck's Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quanta (1924) to Einstein . He wrote a covering letter saying:- Respected Sir, I have ventured to send you the accompanying article for your perusal and opinion. You will see that I have tried to deduce the coefficient in Planck 's law independent of classical electrodynamics. It was enthusiastically endorsed by Einstein who saw at once that Bose had removed a major objection against light quanta. This entry contributed by Michel Barran Indian physicist, educated at Presidency College in Calcutta. He was lecturer at the Calcutta University College of Science from 1917 to 1921 then became a reader in physics at the University of Dacca. His work ranged over statistical mechanics, the electromagnetic properties of ionosphere, theories of X-ray crystallography and unified field theory. His work in quantum statistics is the best known. Einstein's generalization of this work led to the so-called Bose-Einstein statistics for particles of integral spin (now called "bosons," a word coined by P. A. M. Dirac

Abhoyacharan was the Headmaster of Midnapur Collegiate School and scholar, Rajnarayan. Their original home was at Boral, 24-Pargans (Bengal), but both the brothers were teachers by profession, which found them settled in Midnapur.
It was a good riddance for him as he found more time to devote to revolutionary work.

Enough of the Mind
There was a great scientist named Dr. Satyendranath Bose. His was a truly immortal name in the scientific world, not only in India but in other countries as well. Some people are great, but are not good. Dr. Bose was both great and good. His heart was the heart of a child. He had a special fondness for children and played games with them. One game that he liked particularly was called Karam. He was a fine player and, though he had distinguished himself as an eminent scientist, he enjoyed playing with the children and they, for their part, accepted him as their hero. One day he happened to be playing Karam with some children, and was deeply absorbed in the game. A middle-aged man came by and watched the game. After a while the scientist asked him, "What can I do for you?" The man replied, "I would be grateful if you would preside over a meeting we're holding at our school tomorrow." Very politely the scientist responded, "No, I can't. I'm sorry. You'll have to find someone else."

Satyendranath (S. N.) Bose
Born 1894, Calcutta, India. Master's in Mixed Mathematics, Calcutta University, 1915, then in new physics department. Lecturer in Physics, 1917-21. Reader in Physics, Dacca University1921-26. Spent 1924-26 in Europe (Paris with Marie Curie, visited Einstein in Berlin). Professor of Physics, later Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dacca University, 1926-45. Professor of Physics and Dean, Khaira University, 1945. Head of Indian Physical Society. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London, 1958. Derived with Saha the Saha-Bose equation of state for a nonideal gas, 1918. 1920 derived Rydberg law in the old quantum theory. 1924 derived Planck's radiation law using a photon rather than matter oscillator picture, introduced Bose statistics to account for photon identity (Bose statistics extended to gases by Einstein). Later work on total reflection by the ionosphere (1938), the Lorentz group (1939), experimental work on crystallography, fluorescence, thermoluminescence, theoretical work on general relativity.
