He was head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge for nine years and master of Jesus College, Cambridge for three years. Crighton was born on 15 November 1942 in Llandudno, North Wales, to which his parents had been evacuated in World War II to avoid German bombing. Christened David (but not Lloyd!) George, and claiming no Welsh ancestry, he captained his school at rugby and won a mathematics scholarship to Cambridge. He graduated as a top student in 1964. In his first position, as a lecturer at Woolwich Polytechnic, Crighton taught mathematics to mature students in night school, where, he claimed, he mastered the elements of crowd control. But, having reached the top of that career path by the age of 24, he switched his sights to research. In 1967, he joined my group in the mathematics department of Imperial College as a research assistant.

Back to Home Saturday, Mar 29, 2003 Business Posted on Fri, Aug. 30, 2002 Heirs feud over estate Judge to review Batchelor's will BY DOUGLAS HANKS III dhanks@herald.com Three weeks after his funeral, aviation magnate George Batchelor's wedding day will be the subject of a court hearing on whether the nuptials were a ruse for Batchelor's new bride to assume control of his fortune. A frail 81-year-old Batchelor married Amanda Rodgers, 41, on July 6, two days after his son and grandchildren were barred from the Miami Beach estate. The bride's attorney attended the ceremony, and earlier that day watched as Batchelor signed a handwritten prenuptial agreement that gave her a $5 million wedding gift and another $20 million over 10 years. The document also left her Batchelor's house once he died, and named her president of his charitable foundation, which stands to receive the bulk of his estate, estimated at more than $350 million.

New Small Animal Hospital Project Receives Boost
With $100,000 Gift From Batchelor Foundation
by SARAH CAREY T he Batchelor Foundation has given $100,000, the first significant building block in the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine's quest to build a new small animal hospital. The Batchelor Foundation, founded by aviation entrepreneur George E. Batchelor, of Miami Beach, is known for its philanthropy, particularly in South Florida. The foundation focuses primarily on environmental issues and children's causes, including medical research. "George is just passionate about the University of Florida veterinary school's commitment to the care of animals," said his daughter-in-law of 23 years, Sandy Batchelor. "He's not afraid of any animals - tarantulas, snakes, rhinos, cheetahs. And he has petted them all." The UF veterinary college gift, known as a "challenge grant," was originally earmarked toward Small Animal Hospital renovation as well as for the treatment of sick and injured animals receiving care at UF's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The significance of a challenge grant is that all the funds contained in it are to be used on a matching-fund basis for the same purpose. Once the college has raised the matching $100,000, the Batchelor Foundation will contribute an additional $100,000.
